The Iron County Sheriff’s Office notified the Bureau of Land Management on May 30 that dead horses had been found in the Jackson Wash/Arrowhead Mine area west of Cedar City. BLM law enforcement officers have confirmed that eight wild horses were found and all eight died from gunshot wounds.
The case is under investigation, and people with information about the shooting of these wild horses are urged to call the BLM law enforcement hotline at (801) 722-3998.
“It is disheartening to hear this sad news,” comments Utah BLM State Director Sally Wisely. “These are wonderful animals that mean a lot to the citizens of our nation and they should not fall victim to this sort of senseless behavior.”
A reward of up to $13,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of those responsible for the deaths of these horses. The reward fund includes $5,000 from the BLM; $5,000 from the National Mustang Association, one of the oldest wild horse interest groups; and $3,000 from the Intermountain Wild Horse & Burro Advisors, a newly formed nonprofit group.
The Wild Free-Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971 makes it illegal to maliciously cause the death or harassment of a federally protected wild horse or burro and provides for a fine of up to $2000, or one year imprisonment, or both for each violation.
