Utah is joining not only the United States, but the World to commemorate the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001. Patriot’s Day, as President Bush has named it, will be celebrated each year. This year, Governor Leavitt has announced the three word theme of the day: Remembrance, Unity, and Resolve.
“Remembrance” for the lives lost and the horrific times this nation endured one year ago.
“Unity” for the way not only Utahns, but all Americans came together in the aftermath to demonstrate our patriotism.
“Resolve” for the determination to keep the patriotism strong and visible in our lives.
Beginning on Sept 10 at 10 p.m. at the State Capitol Building, the flag will be lowered to half staff. Then at 9:45 a.m. on Sept. 11, Governor Leavitt will lead the State in a moment of silence. This will be followed by a ceremony to honor the rescue workers and declaring this as Patriot’s Day. He also suggests that everyone drive with their car lights on as a symbol of remembrance.
At 10 p.m., that evening there will be a memorial service at the Capitol Building and the flag will again be raised to full staff. This memorial will outline the hopes for the future as well as reflect on the past.
Governor Leavitt is urging all Utah citizens to not only reflect on the events of Sept. 11, 2001, but to show your civic pride by doing acts of patriotism and kindness throughout the week. A website has been set up for citizens to register their thoughts, feelings and reflections and to recognize some of the displays of kindness at kindness@utah.gov.
