The team celebrates the win over the Carbon Dinos.

The Carbon Dinos came to town on Friday to meet the Spartans in football action and left with a defeat by the score of 19-27. The Spartans kicked off to the Dinos. The Dinos put seven points on the board during their first drive of the game. The Spartans running back, Garrett Swenson received the kick and handed off to Kadin Wilson who ran for a large gain. Jason Parrish picked up a short gain to bring up 2nd down and 6-yards to go. On third down a pass was completed from Bowie Jeffs, quarterback to Seth Powell, wide receiver for a 1st down. Parrish immediately dashes down the field for another Spartan 1st down. In the next series Parrish is stopped, Wilson runs for 5-yards and a pass is incomplete to Powell. On 4th down the Spartans go for it and a dead ball foul on Carbon brings Emery to within one yard. Parrish barrels down the middle and picks up the 1st down. Wilson is stopped for a loss and a pass is complete to Brandon Hansen which brings up 3rd and 2. Parrish scrambles for another 1st down and ends up on the Dino 20-yard-line. On 1st down Parrish digs for 4-yards and Emery takes a timeout with 4:14 left in the 4th quarter. Jeffs scrambles for 8-yards which sets up a short run for Parrish to cross the goal line with the Spartans first touchdown. The extra point by Jake Jensen tied the score at 7-7. On the Spartan’s next possession Jeffs scrambles with a quarterback keeper and makes it down to the Carbon 43-yard line. At the end of the 1st quarter the score stood at 7-7. A short carry by Parrish brings the ball down to the 39-yard-line. Jeffs is thrown down in the back field for a loss and Hansen punts the ball away on 4th down. Brady Larsen hits the Dino return man. The Dinos go nowhere and they are forced to punt. Parrish carries the ball for 9-yards and Jeffs takes it across for the 1st down the next play. A pass interference call on the next play gives Emery another 1st down. Jeffs keeps the ball for a small gain and Parrish rushes for 8-yards. Emery has a half-yard to go for the 1st down, but they jump on the play and Hansen boots the ball away with a punt. Carbon completes a pass for a large gain. Swenson intercepts a pass in the end zone, but the officials say he is out of bounds and on the next play the Dinos take the ball in for a touchdown. They miss the extra point and the score stands at 13-7 moving into halftime. Play resumes and two incomplete passes to Hansen and Wilson are thrown, but then Jeffs connects with Swenson for a huge gain and then Parrish takes the ball to the 5-yard-line. The next play he is in for the score. The Dino quarterback Jan Jorgensen gave the Spartans trouble all evening as he scrambled for 1st downs. Bryan Fox, Mike Truman, Josh Sharp, and Matt Harrison played tough defense all night to keep the Dinos at bay. The next Spartan possession is ended with a punt by Hansen. The next Dino drive however sees Jorgensen barreling into the endzone for a score to take the Dinos to a 19-13 lead. The point after wasn’t good and 1:43 remained in the 3rd quarter. Spartans take off running on their possession with a 5-yard gain by Wilson and a pass complete to Powell for a large gain. Hansen catches a pass for a long gain but a holding call brings the ball back. Swenson picks up a huge gain on a completed pass with a long run down the field and it sets up a Parrish touchdown. The point after by Jensen was good and the Spartans go up by one point.
Carbon runs into a bit of trouble with the officials as a holding call and unsportsmen like conduct force them way back. Carbon answers with a long pass completed for a 1st down. The next play however goes the Spartan’s way as Jeffs intercepts a pass in the endzone and the Spartans take over on the 20. The Spartans quickly get a 1st down, but then a couple of quick penalties set them back. Swenson catches a Jeffs pass and runs for a long gain which is added to by an 8-yard Parrish gain. Jeffs punches the ball through for a 1st down. With 2:35 left in the 4th quarter, Emery was in a 4th and 1 position. They called two timeouts and tried to get the Dino line to jump but they wouldn’t, so Jeffs took the ball for a 1st down with 2:27 left. Parrish motors the ball to the 5-yard-line and the next play he goes in for a touchdown to put Emery up 19-27 with time running out. The Spartans will be on the road in playoff action on Nov. 2 in a game against Wasatch at Heber City at 1 p.m.
