Green River Volleyball team finishes the season successfully

The Lady Pirates worked hard for every point and sometimes hit the floor for a save.

The Lady Pirate’s volleyball team has done very well and ended their season with a record of 20 wins and seven losses. At the region tournament the girls played Duchesne and Whitehorse, both for the third time. They won both matches. It was a hard fight but the Pirate’s toughness and their desire to win carried them through. The enthusiastic crowd of Pirate fans helped keep their team going and were the loudest crowd at the tournament to the dismay of their opponents. The Pirates ended up playing the Rich Rebels for the region championship and lost after a very tough match. Despite taking second place, everyone was excited for the chance to play in the state tournament the next week, because this was the first time in several years the Lady Pirate’s volleyball team made it to state.
The Pirates played Bryce Valley the first match and won 15-1 and 15-4. Later that afternoon the Pirates played the Altamont Longhorns. They lost the first set 12-15 after a tough fight but came back and won the second set 17-15. The third set was an extremely hard fought game. The two teams were tied at 13 and the suspense and tension could be felt on and around the court. The Pirates knew they could do it because they had done it before, but what if they didn’t? These thoughts and questions were in everyone’s minds. Tired and tense, time seemed to drag and life seemed to be in slow motion for the girls on the floor.
The Longhorns managed to get one more point and the Pirates knew they had to give it their all. Each time there was a side out the lady’s hopes would rise but then something would go wrong and it was buckle down, break the serve, and get the ball back to them. Finally Altamont got 15 and won the match 13-15 after an agonizing game for the Lady Pirates. It was a huge disappointment for them and their fans but the girls came back the next day with a winning attitude and won their match with Navajo Mountain 15-7 and 15-10.
They beat Whitehorse 15-11 and 15-10 later that afternoon then their season was over. The friendships and memories of a great season will never be forgotten by the team.
Their “never say die” attitude and their ability to work together and encourage each other helped them win their games along with a good deal of talent and hard work. They finished 5th in the state and in a small way brought the excitement of volleyball back to Green River High School by working together as a team. They ended the season by making it farther than any team in quite a few years has and much farther than their rivals expected.
