The crisp, cold air made the waiting bus seem a welcome relief. In the early dark hours of the morning both the girls and boys basketball teams loaded the bus. This trip wouldn’t end until several hours after dark that evening. It was the infamous trip to Navajo Mountain. The trip was as long and tedious as ever but the Pirates came away with three wins. The girls only played a varsity game because of their opponents’ small team. The game was an intense one but the Lady Pirates won 51-48, despite their huge disadvantage of riding the bus practically all day. They had an incredible free throw percentage of 78 percent and an amazing 51 rebounds. The boys varsity team won 87-17. The next day, after an overnight stay in Arizona, the teams went to Monument Valley. Despite suffering one loss in the first junior varsity game the rest of the afternoon went very well for the Pirates. The girls won 68-44 and the boys won 78-54. The Lady Pirates free throw percentage for the game was 75 percent and they also had 45 rebounds. The teams got home late that night but were well satisfied with their accomplishments having lost only one of the seven games played over the weekend. Both teams are doing well and are continually improving. The boys are averaging 73 points a game and they are ranked second in the state. On average they have the highest margin of victory in the 1A division and have lost only two games out of their 12 games played.
The week of Jan. 20-25 was homecoming week for Green River High School. On Monday there was an assembly that centered on an original game designed for the event, the great board game of Doom! It was a board game and each class sent a member to be that class’s pawn.
The game involved many different people and sometimes almost everyone was involved. It was followed by the car bash after school.
On Thursday there was a student council vs. faculty basketball game, which would have gone quite well for student council if the game hadn’t been prearranged. It did, however, provide some great entertainment and comedy for those watching. There was also a bonfire in the evening. On Friday there was a luncheon for GRHS alumni followed by entertainment.
The Pirates played the Raiders from Whitehorse in basketball action. The girls junior varsity team lost 29-35. The boys junior varsity had a win. The girls varsity team lost by a score of 39-57.
The boys varsity team won by a score of 66-54. Homecoming week is over but it was great.
Lady Pirates are Juana Ortiz, Amanda Watterson, Tawni Bigelow, Kelsey Swalberg, Emily Swalberg, Rachel Dunham, Ciji Vetere, Andrea Silliman and Whitney Bigelow.
The boys team consists of varsity: Gabrin Ekker, Bowman Mitchell, Kedric Bayles, Ren Hatt, Jason Luke, Jerome Burns, Jared Johnson, Lance Richards, Jake Mecham and Cody Webster
