Ellner Thompson Brereton
FERRON-After a long and painful illness due to age complications, our sweet Mom passed away July 23, 2003 under the excellent care of the Emery County Nursing Home staff.
In 1918, Ellner was born to Maude and Thomas Thompson in Ferron. She and her brother Preston, and sister Nola, had a fun, but typical childhood milking cows, helping in the field and wading in the Molen Ditch.
When the CCC boys came to the area, she met and married Marvin Brereton of Provo. Over the course of a nine year period, they had three children, lived in many places due to Marv’s employment in road construction, but they always came back to Ferron.
In 1976, Marv died of a sudden heart attack. Later on, Ellner met and married Elmer (Tug) Jones of Orem. They purchased a home in St. George, enjoyed a life of travel and a wonderful companionship for the next 13 years. Tug passed away in 1989.
In 1996, Ellner married her friend, Ralph Halford, and they were companions until Ralph was no longer able to care for her after she had several falls. Ellner came back to Ferron to live in the Emery County Nursing Home until her death.
Ellner loved traveling, her family and friends, and playing cards. She was an excellent card player. Ellner was always described as the “sweetest and most classy lady.” She took great pride in how she looked, her beautiful hair and wearing her favorite color, red. She was adored by her nieces and nephews, always being a favorite aunt. As a young woman, she dreamed of becoming a journalist as she had a strong and creative writing ability. However, being from a poor family, and being a girl, she never realized that dream.
Ellner disliked gossip, being confined and cantaloupe. She was a quiet person, never raising her voice and always being quick to think the best of others. She will be greatly missed by those who love her.
Ellner is survived by her children, Jane (Lee), Joanna (Monte), and Tom (Pam); her grandchildren, Scott, Layne, Mark, John, Kristne, Mindy, Mike and Jenny; husband Ralph; her sister Nola (Harry), and her great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by two husbands, her parents, brother Preston, and grandchild Christopher.
Visitation will be held at the Berg Mortuary in Provo from 9:30-10:30 a.m. on July 30. A memorial service and interment will be at Sunset Lawns in Salt Lake City at 11:30 a.m.
Marino Pete “Doc” Vomvas
Price-Marino Pete “Doc” Vomvas, age 64, passed away July 22, 2003, at his home in Price. He was born June 2, 1939 in Sunnyside, to Annie Konakis and Pete Vomvas.
Doc was a free spirit who loved the outdoors and working with his hands. His carpentry work could not be outdone. He served in the US Army.
He is survived by his children Pete, Lisa, Kenny, Marie Joe, and Shalese; grandchildren Kris, Bryan and Jayden; brothers and sisters Andy, Ted, Diamond and Vangie; special sister-in-law Ilene; numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and one sister Nick, Johnny and Amelia.
Memorial service will be held Aug. 2 at 7 p.m., Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mitchell’s one hour prior to services. Anyone wishing to share a story to celebrate Doc’s life may do so.
Terry L. Hampton
PARIS, IDAHO-Terry Lynn Hampton, 56 passed away July 22, 2003, at the Eastern Idaho Regional Medical Center in Idaho Falls, Idaho. She was born Dec. 15, 1946, in Price, on a Sunday morning to Mark and Betty Pace Hampton. She attended the first grade and then the moved to Sunnyside, where she attended second through eighth grades. She finished high school in Price. She has lived in Moab; Green River, Wyo; and then moved to Paris, Idaho in 1982 and has lived there since. She has been paralyzed, due to a car accident, for the past 26 years.
Terry is survived by her mother, Betty Mortensen of Paris, one sister Marliene (Mike) Sorenson of Idaho Falls, two brothers, Arevell “Stubby” (Kate) Burge of Woods Cross, Dale (Gayle) Hampton of Midway, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father Mark Ammon Hampton, her step-father, Nephi Junior Mortensen and her grandparents.
Funeral services were held July 28 at 11 a.m. in the Paris Stake Center in Paris, Idaho. Friends called that morning. Burial will take place in the Price City Cemetery, Tuesday at 2 p.m. Services under the direction of Matthews Mortuary of Montpelier, Idaho.
Dixie Jamison
PRICE/ROOSEVELT-Dixie Loraine Johnson Jamison, age 73, passed away in her sleep on July 23, 2003 at her home in Price. She was born Jan. 2, 1930 in Price to Clement Joseph and Cleona Swasey Johnson. Married Doswell A. (Curly) Jamison, Nov. 20, 1953 in White Pine, Nev.
Dixie enjoyed household crafts in her younger days, such as painting, crochet and other art forms. In her later years she enjoyed purchasing collectibles and giving them to her grandchildren. Mom was an animal lover and she always had cats or dogs that were as much a part of the family as her children.
Survived by her loving husband, D.A. Jamison, Price; daughter, Jeanne (Daryl) Daniels, Chandler, Ariz.; son, Joe (Sue) Jamison, Price; her sisters, Sis (Bill) Cunningham, Mary (Lott) Majors, JoyLynn (Ernie) McFarlane, all of Cleveland; three grandchildren, Craig (Mari) Jamison, Wendy (Tobin) Roberts, Jackie Christensen; and great-grandson, Kobin Roberts. Preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Jack, Terry and Max Johnson.
Graveside service July 29, 10 a.m, Cleveland City Cemetery. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 East Main Street in Price Monday evening from 7-8 p.m.
John J. Nielson
SPRING GLEN-John (Jim) James Nielson, age 79, passed away July 25, 2003 in Clearfield, Utah.
Born April 23, 1924 in Winter Quarters to Joseph Henry and Florence May Hall Nielson. He married Thelma Lee Morrison Hamelwright on Sept. 30, 1944 in Preston, Idaho. Their marriage was later solemnized for eternity in the Manti LDS Temple.
John graduated from Carbon High School, attended Carbon College and the Colorado School of Mines. He entered the United States Navy and served in WWII on a mine sweeper in the Pacific. Upon completing his military service, he worked in the mines of Carbon County and then entered the construction business. John served as bishop of the Spring Glen ward twice, in the Carbon North Stake Presidency, and Branch President of the Scofield Utah Branch. He was also a member of the Carbon County School Board for many years. Chairman of the Carbon County Democratic Party, and on the Carbon County Water Improvement District. He never got tired of working for the Lord and knew there was a proper way to do things. He loved the youth, the people, his country, and his God. He often said “Everyday is a great day in America.”
Survived by his wife, Thelma; children, Barbara (Clyde) Worthen, Linda Nielson Prettyman, Carole (Gardell) Grundvig, John (Lucinda) Nielson; 19 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; sister Ethel Nielson Gibson.
Preceded in death by a son, Richard; grandson, Andrew; two brothers and two sisters.
Funeral service July 30 at 1 p.m., Spring Glen LDS Ward Chapel. Family will be at the church two hours prior to services. Friends are welcome at Mitchell Funeral Home daily. Interment, Price City Cemetery.
Richard J. Childs
EMERY-Richard J. Childs, 51, loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, uncle passed away peacefully July 27, 2003 at his home in Emery after a short battle with cancer. He was born March 12, 1952 in Price to Max and Renee Childs of Huntington. He married Denise Addley of Emery Feb. 23, 1974 in Emery. Together they have three children; Justin Childs of Emery, Steven and (Katie) Childs of Helper, and Mindy and (Zac) Crawford of Ferron. One grandchild, Gage Crawford and a precious granddaughter on the way.
He is also survived by two brothers; Garth and (Alyce) Childs of Huntington, David and (Kim) Childs of Tacoma, Wash.
Richard was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved fishing, camping, riding 4-wheelers, working with his friends at Nielson Construction, and being with his family which he loved dearly. He also served 25 years with the Emery County Search and Rescue and about 10 years as a volunteer fire chief in the Emery Fire Department.
He was preceded in death by his parents, infant sister, and his in-laws Rex and Barbara Addley.
Funeral services will be held July 31 at 1 p.m. in the Emery Ward chapel in Emery. A viewing will be held from 11 a.m.- 12:45 p.m. prior to the funeral, and a viewing will also be held July 30 from 6-8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale. Burial will be at the Emery City Cemetery.
Alta Mae Hall
HELPER-Alta Mae Jensen Hall, age 69, passed away July 23, 2003 at her home. She was born Aug. 4, 1933 in Pleasant Grove to Perry and Clara Edwards Jensen. Alta Married Norman Hall May 25, 1951 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
As an active member of the LDS Church she served in numerous callings, most notably as a Church Service Missionary with her husband in the Church Employment Center. Alta was a very good homemaker and loved to cook. She taught Weight Watchers for five years.
Alta is survived by her husband of 52 years, Norm, of Helper, children; Vickie and Dewayne Dean of Salt Lake City, Ronald and Dorothy Hall of Castle Dale and Gordon and Karla Hall of Price; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Also survived by sisters Vonda Sauliner and Lorraine Sherwood.
Funeral services will be held July 26 in the Helper Stake Center at 11 a.m. Friends may call Friday from 7-8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Price and one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Helper Mountain View Cemetery.
Mary Lue Parker
PRICE-Mary Lue Parker died July 27, 2003 in Price of natural causes. She was born Jan. 2, 1929 in Ferron to Cecil Henry and Ida Wild Behunin. She married Jimmy Bruce Parker in Craig, Colo. on Sept. 8, 1956. They were later divorced. She was a membr of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She has been a resident of Price for over 28 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a step-father. Survivors include a daughter Peggy Fae (Jake) Hampton of Salt Lake, a brother Cecil Dale (Janice) Behunin of Los Altos, Calif. She is also survived by a sister May B. (Bill) Jorgensen of Castle Dale, several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends. The family would like to thank all of the care givers who have loved and taken care of Mary Lue over the years. We really do appreciate all your loving care.
Friends may call at the Fausett Mortuary in Price on July 29 from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Funeral services will follow in the mortuary chapel at 11 a.m. A grave dedication will follow in the Ferron City Cemetery that afternoon at 1:30 p.m. under the direction of Fausett Mortuary.
Twila Hartzell
PRICE-Twila Jane (Mickie) Hayes Hartzell, age 77, passed away July 22, 2003 in Price. She was born April 25, 1926 in Price to Monroe and Cornelia Nott Hayes. Married Leonard N. Vestal, April 14, 1943 in Salt Lake City. He died Jan. 5, 1954. Married John Hartzell, May 6, 1955 in Grand Junction, Colo.
Member of the LDS Church. She enjoyed crochet, ceramics, hunting, fishing and all types of crafts. Mickie was devoted to her family and was a friend to all. She never met a stranger, Mom was always good for a laugh, a hug and a helping hand. She has left us for a short time but we will be together again.
Survived by her husband, John Hartzell, Price; four children, Louise and Marty Wilkinson, Salina; John E. (Elena) Hartzell, North Cape May, N.J.; Janet E. (David) Meye, Camdenton, Mo.; Jamie E. Hartzell, Salt Lake City; sister Oragale Fairbourn, West Valley City; son-in-law Chuck Echols, Whitefish, Mont.; daughter-in-law Sharron Vestal, Richardson, Texas; 13 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by her parents; two sons Rodger and Larry Vestal; two daughters Sharon Stokes and Connie Echols; three brothers Floyd, Lawrence and Harold; two sisters Lila Flores and Alma Parry.
Funeral service July 28 at Mitchell Funeral Home. Interment Price City Cemetery.
Lucille A. Silliman
GREEN RIVER-Lucille Lenore Anderson Silliman died July 22, 2003 in Price, of natural causes. She was born on Oct. 15, 1915 in Fayette to Charles Ludvig and Maria Peterson Anderson. She was the youngest of seven children, and the only girl.
In 1917, the family moved to Salt Lake City. Lucille graduated from Granite High. She attended the McCune School of Music and was an accomplished pianist and accompanist. Lucille received the B.S. degree from the University of Utah in 1938. She moved to Green River in 1939 to teach elementary school, and lived there until her death.
Lucille married Howard E. Silliman on Jan. 27, 1940. He died May 22, 1999. She was a member of the Green River Bible church, the American Legion Auxiliary, the Green River Women’s Club, and a bridge group. She retired from teaching in 1977.
Lucille is survived by her four children; Judy (Jim) Bowman of Round Rock, Texas, Jeff (Connie) Silliman of San Bernardino, Calif., Karen (Robert) Smith and Rodney of Green River; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Aug. 2 at the Green River Bible church. Friends may greet the family at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment Elgin Cemetery, Green River. Under the direction of Mitchell Funeral Home.

Helen Wilson
SPRING GLEN/DENVER, COLO.-Helen Dolan Wilson, age 93, passed away peacefully in her home in Spring Glen on her birthday July 22. She was born July 22, 1910 in Denver, Colo. to Thomas M. and Julia Nazyark Dolan. Married Howard Joseph Wilson, June 17, 1029, he died Oct. 29, 1983.
Survived by her daughter, Ardith, (Richard) Keppler; seven grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and six great-great-grandchildren that she was blessed with. Among the many friends and loved ones Helen also leaves her loving companion Precious. She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Lucille and Maimie, her daughter Rita Swope, son-in-law Bill Swope and her beloved husband Howard.
Funeral Mass was July 26 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church. Rosary was held Friday evening at the church in Helper. Committal service Price City Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to the Rocky Mountain Hospice.
William A. Coleman
PRICE-William A. Coleman, age 84 passed away July 20, 2003 at his home in Price. He was born August 12, 1918 in Greenwood, Ark. to Benjamin Franklin and Mary Delilah Allenbaugh Coleman. Married Loraine Goff Aug. 28, 1964 in Ely, Nev. She died March 5, 1986.
Longtime resident of Carbon County where he retired as a welder from Valley Camp Coal. Wlliam was a member of the United Mine Workers of America Local #6788 and he proudly displayed his 38 years of service on his hats that he wore. He was an avid fisherman.
Survived by his children, Benny N. Coleman, Enterprise, Ala.; Adabell Allemcesch, Shoshone, Wyo.; Susan Peterson, Rock Springs, Wyo.; Linda Hansen, Green River, Wyo.; Cathy Iriart, St George; and many loving grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Graveside service was held July 25 in the Price City Cemetery.
