Fern Jones Jewkes
PRICE-Fern Jones Jewkes died July 28, 2003, after a long and courageous battle with heart disease. Fern was born on Sept. 6, 1919 in Castle Dale to Elisha Allen Jones and Janette Shiner Jones. She married Harold Jewkes of Orangeville on June 10, 1939. They made their home in Kenilworth and later moved to Price and then Helper.
Fern spent her life in service to her family and friends. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many callings. She was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother. In her later years she was known as Grandma Jewkes to many neighborhood children as well as her own grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She always took the time to serve her own children as well as many other children. She volunteered her time as a cub scout den mother, a 4-H leader and wherever else she was needed. She was the neighborhood mom who always had a house full of kids. Even in her failing health she always had a smile and word of appreciation for anyone who helped her. Fern was the last surviving member of a family of 11 children.
Fern was preceded in death by her husband Harold, her parents, brothers and sisters Reuel Jones, Vord Jones, Ruie Jones, Gerald Jones, Irene Marshall, Lonel Jones, Wayne Jones, Lyle Jones, Grant Jones, Nola Stilson, and grandson Jared Johnson. She is survived by her children Bill Jewkes and wife Vila of Price, and Lynette Eich and husband Joe of Helper, grandchildren James Jewkes, Daniel Jewkes, Janett Saindon, Jake Johnson, Trevor Byrge, Travis Byrge, Angel Eich, Ashley Eich, and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Helper Stake Center on Aug. 1. Interment in the Mountain View Cemetery in Helper.
Chris Kavros
PRICE- Chris C. Kavros, age 76, passed away Saturday, July 26, 2003, after surgery at the US Veterans Administration Hospital in Salt Lake City.
He was born Dec. 31, 1926 in Helper to Charles K. and Kaliopia Zombanakis Kavros. In 1975, he married Athena Stamoulis and they had many happy years supporting and caring for each other.
When Chris was a young boy, he went to live with his brother-in-law, Jim Leonakis, and his sister, Ethel, who raised him, in Altonah.
While there, he ranched with Jim until 1951, when he served his country in the Korean War.
After returning, he lived in Price with a year or so mining in Leadville, Colo. He later owned and operated Chris’s Pizza Parlor in Price.
He was a true friend to those in need. He enjoyed doing chores, shopping for those who couldn’t, checking on the elderly, sick, the shut-ins and delivering the good food Athena made and making sure everyone was fed.
He was a member in good standing of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church and the Price American Legion Post 3.
Chris enjoyed a rich life of a clean and peaceful home, a wonderful wife, always great food, and many friends.
He leaves behind loving wife, Athena Kavros of Price; brother, Pete Kavros of California; and many good friends. Preceded in death by parents; brother, Louie Kavros; four sisters, Ethel, Sophie, Georgia and Maria.
Funeral services were held July 31, at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church. Trisagion service, Aug. 1 at Mitchell Funeral Home. Interment, Price City Cemetery.
Chris Gilson-Jackson
PRICE-Retha Christine Gilson-Jackson, age 40, passed away Aug. 2, 2003 in Price after a valiant battle with Lou Gehrig’s Disease. She was born Dec. 12, 1962, in Grants, N.M. to Laurence D. and Kathryn Allen Gilson.
She served in the California, San Diego Mission for the LDS Church. She loved the outdoors, camping, fishing or hunting with her family and friends. Many of them have afghans, bed dolls or doilies she made with her talented hands. The loves of her life are her little twins, Andrew and Katlyn.
Chris is survived by her children, parents, Laurence and Kathryn Gilson of Price, sister Irene Kay Haymore of Spanish Fork, brothers Robert (Tonya) of Price, James (Tami) of Castle Dale, and Ronald (Kellie) of Springville and special friend to the end Sue Moorhead.
Funeral services will be held August 6 at 1 p.m. in the Price Stake Center, located on the corner of 500 East and 100 South. Friends may call Tuesday evening from 7-9 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Price and one hour prior to services at the Church. Burial will be in the Cliffview Cemetery in Price.
Bert Gileno
COLUMBIA-Our loving husband, father, grandfather, uncle and friend, Bert Ralph Gileno, Sr., age 79, passed away Aug. 4, 2003 while surrounded by his loving family in Provo.
Bert was born April 27, 1924 in Venice, Calif. to Fillipo A. and Matilda Marquez Gileno. He married Jennifer “Jenny” Cameron, June 29, 1989 in Reno, Nev.
He was a member of the LDS Church. Bert loved his family very much and made each of them feel special in his own way. He was a wonderful husband, friend and loving father who helped his children develop their talents. Honorably served the US Navy during WWII and he was very proud of his country. He especially enjoyed his pond in the front yard and looked forward to feeding his fish and watching them everyday. Bert loved his racing horse “Goodnews” back in the later 1950s and was proud of all of the awards his horse won. He loved fishing, camping and being outdoors in his yard. Bert enjoyed raising pigeons for years with his son Bert Jr. They had a lot of fun chasing those birds!
Survived by his loving wife, Jennifer Gileno of Columbia, who was his companion and soul mate for the last 22 years, Bert’s five daughters and two sons, Sharron (Lyle) Albaugh, Birdseye; Martha (Robert) Andersen, Columbia; Marie (Fred) Owens, East Carbon; Bert (Lani) Gileno, Jr., Newark, Calif; Dolores Burnsides, Oregon; Phillip Gileno, Hayward, Calif.; Anna (John) Krauss, Columbia; his feline lap sitter “Lucky” whom he loved very much; mother-in-law, Jean Cameron, Sunnyside; sister-in-law, Carla (Oscar) Meyer, Md.; brother-in-law, Casey (Michelle) Cameron, Houston, Texas; 18 grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews; sister Cora (Bruce) Rolfe, Texas; brother, Ernest Gileno, Californis.
Preceded in death by his parents, brother, Angelo Gileno; sister, Vera Scroggs; and his loving companion, “Mickey.”
Gordon D. Boulton
FERRON-Gordon D. Boulton, age 75 passed away on Aug. 2, 2003 at his home surrounded by his family. Born on May 27, 1928 in Bountiful to James and Camilla Randall Boulton. Married Anna Dee Tingey March 17, 1951 in Elko, Nev., later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple.
He loved fishing and helping anyone in need.
Gordon is survived by his wife of 52 years, Anna of Ferron; children Dixie and George Smith of Nevada, Wallace and Louise Boulton of Nevada, Charlotte and Winston Shrout of St. George, Alan and Connie Boulton of Arizona, Lynn and Debbie Boulton of Woods Cross, Wendy and Rick Price of Ferron; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Also surived by eight brothers and sisters. Preceded in death by five grandchildren and one son-in-law.
Graveside services will be held Aug. 6 at 1 p.m. in the Ferron Cemetery where friends may call one hour prior to services.
Richard J. Childs
HUNTINGTON-Vonda McElprang Corgiat, lifetime resident of Huntington, died Aug. 3, 2003 at age 96. She was born in 1907 to Peter and Maud McElprang of Huntington and was sister to two brothers, the late Milton and Elvin McElprang, as well as three sisters, the late Bertha (Louis) Jones, Della (James) Potter and Mary McElprang. She married John R. Corgiat in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple, and together they built and managed Jack’s Motor Service in Huntington for 40 years. They also established Jack’s Warehouse and Wholesale Candy. Jack passed away March 10, 1979.
As a young girl, Vonda learned to wash and card wool and to quilt, a skill which she cultivated all her life, making hundreds of quilts for her children and grandchildren. She also learned gardening skills from her mothers and she always maintained a large, beautiful garden at her home.
Vonda served actively throughout her life assuming such positions as President of the Relief Society, MIA Ward Officer as well as Stake Officer. She taught Primary and served as President of the Huntington Chapter of the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers. She also taught Sunday school for 27 years.
Vonda is survived by daughters RayLene Corgiat of Leeds, N.Y., and Mrs. Darlene (David) West, Salt Lake City, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Aug. at 11 a.m. in the Huntington LDS Stake Center on Main Street. Friends may call Thursday evening Aug. 7 from 6-8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary in Castle Dale and also one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will follow in the Huntington City Cemetery.
