James Bruce Boyack
HELPER-James Bruce Boyack, age 61, passed away Aug. 16, 2003 at his home in Helper. He was born Jan. 6, 1942 in Helper to Franklin Pace and Elda Ames Boyack. Jim attended schools in Carbon County, then enlisted and served honorably in the US Navy on the USS Duncan, USS Kemper County and the USS Diachenko. After retruning home he began his railroad career as a carman with the Denver and Rio Grande Railroad and was a proud member of the Railroad Carmen of USTC459. In 1984, he retired from the railroad and then devoted his time to his favorite hobby, custom cars.
Jim was a proud member of the National Pin Stripers of America Association, the Pinheads, and the Taildraggers. He was honored with three Master Craftsman Awards for his work with custom cars from the CC Riders, San Rafael Swell and Helper City Outlaw Car Clubs. He was co-founder of the Butch Cassidy Car Club and co-organizer of all 15 Helper Outlaw Car Shows in the Helper City Park on Father’s Day weekend. Jim had hundreds of custom vehicles pass through his little garage in Helper and he loved them all. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, neighbors and other hot rod enthusiasts around the country.
Survived by his daughters, Erin (Brett) Rowley, Leigh (Richard) Pierce, Summer (Jed) McBride, Patty (Phil) Pappas; son, James Bruce and wife (Kim); and Ike Lee; grandchildren, Rachel, Phil, Jordan, Chris, Austin, Cortland, Kylie, Connor, Danni, Dakota and Faithlynne; sisters, Jackie Stone, Pricilla (John) Westenskow, Joan (Jon) Piercy; brothers, Earl (Francis) Standley, Pace (Jean) Boyack, Jr., Pat (Mary) Boyack. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Monty and Lester Standley.
Funeral service, Aug. 22 at 11 a.m. in the Helper LDS Stake Center. Family will be at Mitchell Funeral Home, 233 East Main Street in Price, Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. and at the church Friday one hour prior to services. Interment, Mt. View Cemetery, Helper.
Calvin and JoAnn Cox
Calvin and JoAnn Cox passed away Aug. 15, 2003 of injuries sustained in an automobile accident while traveling to the Manti Temple.
Calvin was born Mar. 24, 1934 in Orangeville, to Donald T. and Helen Fox Cox. JoAnn was born Nov. 23, 1934 in Castle Dale to William Morris and Maree Rasmussen Peacock. They were married May 24, 1951 in Orangeville. Their marriage was solemnized in the Manti LDS Temple on Feb. 25, 1978.
Calvin was a hard worker. His early years were spent working on his father’s sheep herd with his brother, Gary. He worked as a miner in local coal mines and the potash mine in Moab. He worked in construction for 40 years, starting his own general contracting business, C & C Improvement, where he enjoyed working with his sons.
JoAnn was a gifted and accomplished musician, teaching and performing her entire life. She played in dance bands, beginning at the age of twelve. She composed many songs, one of the first being the Emery High school song. She was involved in numerous community acts of service including singing at over 2,500 funerals, and playing the accordion and/or piano at senior citizen events and in schools throughout Carbon and Emery counties.
Calvin and JoAnn were active members of the LDS Church and served in various callings and leadership positions. They enjoyed activities with family, including fishing and boating with their children and grandchildren. They served in the Manti LDS Temple for 10 wonderful years.
They are survived by their children, Paul and Laurie Cox, Moab; Keith and Rachel Cox, Spring Glen; Catherine Cox, Layton; Melody and Kelly Kimber, Riverton; Helen and Michael McCandless, Huntington; 18 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Calvin is survived by sister, Jane and Pete Jensen; brothers, Steven and Rhonda Cox and Von and Betty Frandsen, and sisters-in-law Della Cox and Rayola Cox. JoAnn is survived by sister, Evelyn Huntsman and brother, George and Arlene Peacock. Calvin was preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Jennie Frandsen Cox, brothers Gary and Garth, sister-in-law, Darla Cox, and infant sister, Renee. JoAnn was preceded in death by parents, step-father, Guy S. Ware, brother-in-law, Howard Huntsman and daughter-in-law, Deborah Arehart Cox.
Services will be held Aug. 20, at 11 a.m. at the Helper LDS Stake Center, located at 150 Ridgeway, Helper. Friends may call Tuesday from 6-8 p.m. at Fausett Mortuary, 680 East 100 South Price, and one hour prior to service at church. Interment will be at Orangeville Cemetery.
Angie De Angelis
PRICE-Angelina Spadafora DeAngelis, age 88, passed away Aug. 16, 2003 at Castleview Hospital while surrounded by her loving family. She was born April 1, 1915 in Sunnyside to Francisco and Mary Gallo Spadafora. Married Frank De Angelis Sept. 15, 1935 in Provo. He died May 15, 1995.
Angie was a member of Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church where she was a member of the Altar Society for many years. She was a lifelong resident of Carbon County and graduate of Carbon High School Class of 1935. Angie was a loving and caring person who was employed with JC Penney’s for over 40 years.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to Vangie, Tiffany and Patricia for their loving care of Angie over the years.
She is survived by her nieces, Rusty Jouflas, Maria Matthews, both of Price; Paula Robertson, Spring Glen; sister, Frances (Bruce) Barnhill, Tallahassee, Fla.; four grandchildren, Chris and Toni Matthews, Jaci (Guy) Adams, Michael (Carrie) Robertson; three great-grandchildren, Nickolas and AJ Adams, and Abby Jo Robertson. Preceded in death by parents, husband, and eight brothers and sisters.
Funeral Mass, Aug. 21 at 10 a.m., Notre Dame de Lourdes Catholic Church. Vigil service Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. at Mitchell Funeral Home. Family will be at Mithcell’s Wednesday and Thursday one hour prior to services. Committal service, Price City Cemetery.

Frank Tomsic
“Grizz”
HELPER-Beloved, husband, father, uncle, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Frank Tomsic, age 78, passed away Aug. 14, 2003 at his home.
Born Feb. 4, 1925 in Royal to Frank and Manda Katalin Tomsic.
He married Carmela Peterson, Nov. 28, 1965 in Las Vegas, Nev., she died May 22, 1998.
He was a member of the Catholic Church. Longtime resident of Royal, Castle Gate and Helper. Frank served his country in the US Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. After returning home, he worked in various coal mines in Carbon County for over 30 years and was an active member of the United Mine Workers of America. During this time Frank was known as an excellent coal miner, hard worker, never missed work and was very well liked and respected by his co-workers.
Frank loved to spend time in his garden and take his companions (dogs) everywhere he went. He loved spending time with his family and will be dearly missed by his family and a community of friends.
Survived by his sister, Mary Corak, Salt Lake City; one step-daughter, two step-sons and their spouses; Gaylene (Eugene) Crocco, Price; Ben L. (Georgene) Peterson, James L. (Paula) Peterson, both of Salt Lake City; nephew, Joseph (Amy) Corak; niece, Marcia Corak; seven grandchildren, Ben, Linda, Gene, Christy, Carrie, James and Michael; eight great-grandchildren, Michael, Anna, Camie, Angelina, Casey, Cade, Josie, and Jesse; great nieces Andrea and Katie Corak.
Preceded in death by parents, brother, Tony Tomsic; sister, Margaret Hutchinson; and wife, Carmela.
Funeral Mass was held Aug. 18 at 10 a.m. at the St. Anthony Catholic Church in Helper. Vigil service held Sunday evening at 5 p.m. at the Mitchell Funeral Home in Price. Committal service at the Price City Cemetery.
Gerald Leon Smith
Gerald Leon Smith passed away Aug. 16, 2003 at Utah Valley Hospital, surrounded by his family. He was born June 4, 1935 in Holladay, a son of Forrest G. and Sarah Jane Griffiths Smith of Price. He married his high school sweetheart, Bonnie Jean Lewis on Oct. 10, 1953 in Price and they have two sons and seven grandsons. Michael Leon (Linda Nelson) Smith and Daniel N. Smith of Sandy, Jeremy L. (Melanie Schmoyer) Smith, of Orem, Stephen M. (Laura Bennett) Smith of Draper and Elder Matthew L. Smith serving in the Brisbane Australia Mission. Ted Gerald (Darla Patten) Smith of American Fork and Jared 13, Joshua 10, and Jacob 8. He really loved and appreciated his grandchildren and was proud of them and their accomplishments.
A 1953 graduate of Carbon High School, he joined the US Navy and retired with 20 years as a Chief Petty Officer. He then began his second career with the government where he opened the Social Security Office in Price. He later transferred to the Provo Office where he was an Operations Supervisor until his retirement on December 31, 1994.
He was a volunteer for the AARP Driver’s Safety Program and served as an Assistant State Coordinator. He was also serving on the committee for the Utah Work Incentives for People with Disabilities.
He is survived by his wife of Orem, sons and grandchildren, his parents, sisters, Colleen (Dwayne) Hatch of American Falls, Ida., Judi (George) Baker of Orangeville, brothers Roger (Karen) Smith of Castle Dale and Greg Smith of Craig, Colo.
He was preceded in death by a brother Grant (Bena Black) Smith of Price and sisters Yvonne Smith and Sharon Taldo.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at UVRMC for the loving care and support.
Funeral services will be held on Aug. 20 at 11 a.m. at the Berg Drawing Room Chapel, 185 East Center, Provo. Friends may call at the mortuary on Wednesday one hour prior to services. Interment will be in the Utah Veterans Memorial Park, 17111 South Camp Williams Road, six miles south of Riverton, Utah on State Route 68.
Lester Von Minchey
CLEVELAND- Lester Von Minchey, 76, died peacefully at home Aug. 17, 2003 with his wife by his side after a courageous battle with complications from cancer.
Lester was born June 3, 1927 in Helper, Lester June and Alice La Von Carlow Minchey. He married Shawna La Rue McFarlane Dec. 23, 1960 in Cleveland.
He was baptized a member of the LDS Church three weeks ago and looked forward to the time he could be sealed with his family forever. He loved to travel, and served 11 years in the U.S. Army and for many years on the Cleveland City Council. He was a contractor and owner/operator of Minchey Digging for 30 years. Lester gave many years of selfless service to his community. His greatest love in life was being with his family.
Lester is survived by wife, Shawna, of Cleveland; six children, JoLene (Bruce) Sharp of Hurricane; Bill (Janet) Minchey of Beaver; Rex (Joy) Minchey of Jerome, Idaho; Shellee (Forrest) Luke, Craig, Colo.; Troy (Sandra) Minchey, Minersville; and Tonya (Jeff) Cowley of Cleveland. Also surviving are grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren; sister, Lynn Ann Jones of Alaska; and three brothers, Henry Minchey of St. George; Jack Minchey of Grantsville; and Mark Minchey of Escalante. Preceded in death by parents; brother, Jay and grandson, Joseph Sharp.
Friends may call for a visitation at Fausett Mortuary in Price Thur., Aug 21, from 6:30-8 p.m. Funeral services will be Friday, Aug. 22, 11 a.m., in the Cleveland LDS Ward Chapel with a viewing prior from 9:30-10:45 a.m. Interment, Cleveland City Cemetery.
LaGrand E. Wilberg
LaGrand E. Wilberg, of Rhome, Texas, 72, a retired security officer, passed away peacefully Aug. 12, 2003, at his Rhome, Texas residence.
LaGrand was a Utah native and born-again Christian. He was born on Feb. 7, 1931, in Castle Dale, the son of Warren and Lila Wilberg. LaGrand was raised in Emery County, married his life-long love, Charlotte Van Buren, on May 27, 1950. He served with honor in the US Army from 1952-1954.
LaGrand worked as a rancher, a bus and truck driver, and served on the Utah Highway Patrol for 14 years. He later retired at the age of 55 from Emery Mining Corp. so he could travel and play. He was an active and faithful member of Eagle Mountain International Church.
LaGrand loved his family, life, people and the Lord.
Survived by his wife of 53 years, Charlotte Van Buren Wilberg of Rhome, Texas; son, Scott (Linda) Wilberg, and their children, Chris, Jake, Ashley, and Chelsea, all of Sandy; daughter, Cynthia (Bob) Nasi, and their children Shalyn and Sarah, all of Fort Worth, Texas; brothers, Kay Wilberg and Wayne Wilberg, of Castle Dale; sister, Janet W. Taylor of Huntington.
Funeral services were held Aug. 15 at the Eagle Mountain International Church. Burial at Dido Cemetery.
Spencer Jeremiah Anderson
CASTLE DALE -Spencer Jeremiah Anderson, infant son of Con and Jessica Anderson of Castle Dale was born on Aug. 11. He passed away peacefully in his mother’s arms a few hours later after a valiant effort to live. While he has returned to his Heavenly Father, he tarried in this life long enough to become an eternal son and member of our family.
Spencer is survived by his parents and brothers, Derek and Ethan; grandparents Randy and Betsy Johnson, all of Castle Dale, Grandparents Carol Anderson of College Ward and Carvin and Linda Anderson of Paradise. Also survived by numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. Preceded in death by uncles, Jeremiah Johnson and Mark Anderson.
Graveside services were held on Aug. 15 at noon at the Castle Dale Cemetery.
Richard LaMar Russell
ELMO-Richard LaMar Russell, age 66, passed away suddenly Aug. 17, 2003 in Provo. Born Jan. 6, 1937, in Fillmore, to William G. and Maurine Christensen Russell.
He was a member of the LDS Church. Resident of Elmo since 1978, where he was a former employee of Soldier Creek Coal Company for many years. At the time of his death he was employed with Maca Supply in Springville.
Richard’s greatest enjoyment was his family, especially his grandchildren.
Survived by his loving wife of 40 years: Donna Russell, Elmo; mother, Maurine Russell, Springville; two daughters, Cheryl (Martin) Vuksinick, West Valley; Shelly Prince, Sandy; two brothers, Ellis (Janet) Russell, RIverton; Jay (Nancy) Russell, West Valley; best friend, Merrill (Kathy) Chatwin, Genola; four loving grandchildren, Marty and Lessa Vuksinick, Zachary and Brooklyn Prince.
Preceded in death by his father, sister, Colleen Quintana; brother, Ivan Russell.
Funeral service will be held Aug. 21 at 1 p.m. at the Elmo LDS Ward Chapel. Family will be at the church one hour prior to service. Friends are welcome at Mitchell Funeral Home in Price daily. Interment Elmo City Cemetery.
