Cleveland Town receives Hockey Puck Awards

By SHARREE JENSEN Staff Writer

At the Cleveland Town Meeting on Sept. 11, the council held a public hearing for their Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) application. Previous grants awarded to Cleveland have included a $60,000 grant for the playground, and a $26,150 grant for fire department equipment. This year the council is applying for the whole amount available, $81,000. They are eligible for either the full amount or a portion depending on other city applications received. The council held the hearing to get public input on possible projects for the grant money. Some of the suggestions made were: a senior citizen’s center, a skate park, and a new fire station.
After the public hearing, the council began its regular monthly meeting. A representative from Exerplay was present to go over the plans and options for a skate park. They obtained information from the youth in the area about what they would like to see at a skate park and put together a plan. It is a modular park, which means that most of the pieces of equipment do not need to be bolted down. This makes it possible to rearrange the equipment periodically and create a new environment. She stressed Exerplay’s interest in safety and let all present know that they equipment is heavy enough that it would have to be moved with a forklift.
The equipment is made out of steel, which is cheaper and more durable than concrete and other materials used. There are no screws or bolts on the skating surfaces. There is a 15-year warranty on the equipment. The metal is coated with a special coating that will require maintenance twice a year, to prevent rusting.
The council pointed out that the plan presented is a complete park, and that they would most likely start out with cementing the area and getting a few ramps. They would then add a few pieces at a time later.
With the property the city has acquired, they would like to put in the skate park, a volleyball court, horseshoes, and a basketball court.
Jeff Adams from the South East Utah Association of Governments, was also present at the meeting. He presented the mayor with the Introduction Award for signing up to do the 21st Century Community program. He explained the hockey puck, as a way to plan for the future, by getting necessary ordinances and enforcements in place. He then also presented the mayor with all three of the following awards: the bronze, silver and gold hockey pucks. He commended them on how quickly the city had joined the program, planned and carried out their projects. He encouraged them to keep working towards the next goal, which would award the council a visit from the Governor.
The council discussed that some items at the cemetery had been stolen. The mayor noted that this has become a problem county-wide and stressed the need for people with any information to help stop crime in the area.
The council also addressed the problem with the tree in front of the pavilion. The tree needs to be trimmed because there are power lines that will cause difficulty. The council has received a bid from Carl Jones of Ferron for $1,200.
They have also planted fruitless mulberry trees in the park, that should grow to about 30 feet.
The council will be sending out letters to residents about tree and shrubbery trimming. Owners are responsible to keep sidewalks clear for pedestrians. If owners do not trim their bushes, the city will do it to meet the city’s needs.
The council also has agreed that home businesses will receive a “provisional” business license. If the council receives complaints from neighbors, they will review the complaints and have the ability to revoke the license.
Carisa Mann of Cleveland asked for a business license for her business “Babe-autiful Designs.” She will be making baby headbands, and accessories from her home. The council granted her a provisional license.
In other business, the council mentioned the need for a new Youth Council leader. They would like someone with children that are in high school. The next Cleveland Town meeting will be Oct. 9 at 7 p.m.
