George Washington’s Christmas Prayer

By By

During this holiday season, as we remember our troops stationed overseas, in particular those brave soldiers in harm’s way in Afghanistan and Iraq, we draw comfort and hope from the fact that the American soldier has been victorious even in the face of cold, hunger, violence, and terrorism. In her new book Faith of Our Founding Father,: The Spiritual Journey of George Washington, best-selling author Janice T. Connell shows how Washington’s deep religious faith helped him to guide the Continental Army through the dark winter of Valley Forge to the triumph of liberty and freedom at Yorktown.
Faith of Our Founding Father is a spiritual biography of Washington and includes a full reprinting of the prayers discovered, written in his own hand, in his personal prayer book.
For families wishing to bless our country and our brave soldiers this Christmas season, below is a prayer excerpted from George Washington’s prayer book:
“O kind Father, continue Thy mercy and favor to me this day and ever hereafter.
Preserve and defend our rulers in Church and State.
Bless the people of this land.
Be a father to the fatherless,
A comforter to the comfortless,
A deliverer to the captives and
A physician to the sick.
Let Thy blessings be upon our friends, kindred and families. Amen.”
