Historical Society


Emery County Historical Society presents Cowboy Poetry on Aug. 19 at 6:30 p.m., at Castle Valley Outdoors in Moore.

Tennis Tryouts


Emery High School Tennis try-outs open to all girls from ninth thru 12th grade, Aug. 16th at 8:00 am at the tennis courts at the high school.

Cleveland Basketball


Cleveland Town is starting an outdoor open court basketball league for boys and girls, seventh grade and up. If you would like to participate, come to the Cleveland Park on Aug. 12 at 6 p.m. Youth from all communities are welcome. Questions, call Brink Griffin, 653-2536 or town hall , 653-2310.

Meet Jon Huntsman, Jr.


Jon Huntsman, Jr. will be at the Castle Dale City Park on Aug. 18 at 7 p.m. He will answer any questions. The park is located at 100 North 100 East.

SRJH Girls Volleyball


San Rafael Junior High girls volleyball tryouts will be held Aug. 16 from 8-10:30 a.m. in the school gym.

Survival Fair/Emergency Preparedness


“Are you prepared to survive?” Come to the survival fair and become educated with the latest information. The fair will be held Oct. 8 from 5-8 p.m. at Emery High School. There will be many booths with all types of survival information available.

Economic Summit


Emery County’s 2004 Economic Summit “What’s Swell in Emery County” will be held Sept. 14 at the County Office Building in Castle Dale. Registration will begin at 7:30 a.m. Pre-registration can be completed with Emery County Economic Development, 381-5576. Keynote address will be given by Jon Huntsman, Jr. and several breakout sessions will be held.

Bike 4 Breast Cancer


Kathy Betz, is riding 3,500 miles, solo across the country to raise awareness and promote proper breast health. She is the founder of Bike 4 Breast Cancer, which raises funds to directly support the hosting community’s breast cancer programs. She will be at the Shady Acres Campground on Sept. 3. San Rafael Football


All eighth and ninth grade boys, football practice begins Aug. 16 at San Rafael Junior High football field from 5-7 p.m. Come dressed in workout clothes and football cleats if you have them. Contact Russ Willson at 384-2811 for more information.

Learn to Crochet


Aug.13, from 4-6 p.m., anyone 8 years old or older is welcome to attend. Community 4-H Club will be held at the old court house, Call 381-2381 and leave your name and number. The small fee covers the crochet hook and materials.

Star Gazing


Professor Don Burge will host a star gazing in Huntington Canyon on Aug. 20 at 8:30 p.m. Meet at the Huntington Reservoir parking lot near the top of the canyon. It is free, and bring a jacket, a chair and a flashlight. A telescope or binoculars would be helpful but not necessary. Professor Mark Bunnell will be a guest speaker.

Tour de Emery


Mark Aug. 28 on the calendar for the Tour de Emery, bike ride against cancer. Get an entry form or donor sheet at any Emery County library. Ride will begin in Emery and end in Cleveland. Riders can ride all or part of the ride. Snacks and drinks will be provided and helmets are required. Sponsored by the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and promoted by MECCA.

Canyon View Registration


Student schedules for the 2004-2005 school year have been prepared. Registration will be as follows: ninth grade, Aug. 10 at 9 a.m.-noon; eighth grade Aug. 10, 2-5 p.m.; and seventh grade Aug. 11, 8:30 a.m.-noon. For families registering more than one student, registration may be completed in one visit. Two orientation programs will be held for seventh grade students, the first at 8:30 a.m. and the second at 10:30 a.m. All seventh grade students should attend one orientation.

Rural Utah Economic Summit


Southern Utah University Center for Rural Life, along with the Utah Rural Development Council and the Utah Department of Community and Economic Development will host the 17th annual Utah Rural Summit, Aug. 11-13 at the Hunter Conference Center. BLM Draft RMP Public Comment Meetings


Public comment and question meetings will be held for the BLMs recently released RMP. The draft RMP may be viewed online at www.pricermp.com, or call the Price Field Office at 1-435-636-3600. A CD rom is also available. Meetings will be held: Aug. 24, Castle Dale, Museum of the San Rafael, 4-9 p.m.; Aug. 25, Green River, J.W. Powell River History Museum, 4-9 p.m.; Aug. 26 Price, Holiday Inn, 4-9 p.m.; and Aug. 31, Salt Lake City, Best Western Salt Lake Plaza Hotel, 122 West South Temple, 4-9 p.m.

Spartan Cheer Camp


The Spartan Cheerleaders are putting on a cheer camp Aug. 10-11 from 9-11:30 a.m. Preregistration will be at 8:45 a.m. on Aug. 10. Camp will be held in the Emery Spartan Old Gym. There is a fee involved. No black shoes, no jewelry and wear hair up and out of face. Family and friends are welcome during the last hour of camp to watch the performance of what has been learned.

Emery Football


The Black and Gold football game will be Aug. 13 at 5 p.m. Sophomores and Junior Varsity and Varsity at 7 p.m. The first game will be at home on Aug. 20 against Union at 7 p.m. Coach Reynolds noted the first football game will be before school starts.

Arbor Day Foundation

Veterans Golf Tournament


The first annual veterans golf tournament will be held Aug. 13 at the Hill Air Force Base Golf Club. Veterans from all branches of the service are welcome for a day of golf, good and prizes. Food Handlers Class


Food handlers classes will be held in Castle Dale at the Health Department on Aug. 12 at 4 and 7 p.m. There is a charge for these classes and they are two hours in length. For more information contact Terri at 381-2252 or Dr. Bjork at 637-3671.

Educational Opportunity Center


The College of Eastern Utah has a new Educational Opportunity Center serving Carbon and Emery Counties. The program is designed to assist adults who would like to start into a college of their choice. The Educational Opportunity Center can assist students with a variety of services including financial aid applications, college course selection and completing their GEDs, if needed. It is a free service and targets low income and first generation students. If you would like to start college in the fall, now is the time to get started. The Educational Opportunity Center is located in the Jennifer Leavitt Building CEU – Room 213. Feel free to walk in without an appointment or call Shawnee at 613-5243. During the summer the center will be closed on Fridays.

Car donations and the IRS


In recent years, the number of car donation organizations has increased dramatically. Publication 4303, A Donor’s Guide to Car Donations, provides descriptions of several different car donation programs, filing and disclosure requirements for charities operating these programs and related information. A field service officer from the Veterans of Foreign Wars, department service office, will be in the area to assist in understanding and applying for rightful benefits, on Aug. 12 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. in the Price Workforce Service Center.

The latest round of funding from the Western Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education program will soon be disbursed. Western SARE farmer/rancher grant proposals are due Oct 1 and professional development program proposals are due Oct. 15. CASA Volunteers Needed


Each year hundreds of children in Emery and Carbon counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Joseph Venus Art Exhibit


Utah artist, Joseph Venus’ art will be on exhibit at the College of Eastern Utah Prehistoric Art Museum, 155 East Main in Price, during August.

Castle Dale Library Story Time

Operation Home Support

Emery History Book


Emery Town is republishing the original Emery History Book. This book is being reproduced exactly as it was with no changes. Utah Valley Cancer Center, located at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center has a new toll-free phone number. Anyone can call 1-866-549-3800 to schedule an appointment, get information about local cancer support groups or to find out more about IHC cancer services and physicians. Hours are 8 a.m.-5 p.m.

Eyeglasses for Lions Club


The Huntington Lions Club is gathering used eyeglasses to be distributed to needy people in Third World countries. There is a special need for childrens glasses. For more information, contact Judy Lang at 687-5349.
