Clawson Town held a public hearing to gather comments from residents concerning the upcoming community development block grants. The grant application must be completed and turned in by Dec. 3.
Mayor Carey Bloomer explained at the beginning of the public hearing that the CDBG has $7 million to distribute between seven counties. The income survey was completed two years ago and Clawson will be in the process if the grant application is submitted prior to the deadline.
The CBDG prioritizes the applications and ranks the rural communities with water, sewer, senior centers or ADA requests higher on the list than those who do not. Clawson does not have any of the preferred projects so its application will not be considered high on the list. Mayor Bloomer stated, “We will get something.”
As there were no public comments, the council discussed several projects and decided to apply for funding for the following projects: bathrooms at the park; enclosing the pavilion at the park; and construction of baseball fields.
Following the public hearing, Mayor Bloomer opened the regular council meeting. Councilman Jon Sorensen reported that he had attended the economic development council meeting. Several projects were discussed to promote economic growth in Emery County, including improvements to the county fair and a flea market.
Sorensen stated that the economic development council is open to consider any idea that will promote and bring growth and revenue into the county. A horse breeding ranch is presently relocating here from California and that will help the agriculture industry. He also stated the need for recreational vehicle facilities here. The economic development council will work to get the word out on what is available here at the present time.
Mayor Bloomer reported that Councilman Clay Gasser who had been excused from the meeting, has secured a grant for the purchase of playground equipment to be installed in the Clawson Town park. Shannon Hiatt of the Emery County Recreation District has given Clawson $17,000 and Gametime Company will match the funding. With the acquisition of these funds, playground equipment has been purchased and will be installed in the next few weeks. Clawson Town will be responsible to prepare the site at the park for the installation.
Councilman Jerry Price stated that he has contacted Safety Supply and Sign and ordered the stop signs for the town. Prior to ordering the signs, Price spoke with the county about the specifications of the signs. He has ordered 10 signs and they will be 30 inch, engineer grade signs.
The next Clawson Town Council meeting will be Dec. 9 at 6 p.m.
