Green River boys, girls win basketball games

The Lady Pirates of Green River High School took their record to 6-1 with a victory over Grand. They won the game 47-31. The boys won two games last week as they defeated Altamont on Wednesday 46-40 and Wayne on Saturday 49-42.
Adrianna Cordova continued to play well as she scored 27 points and pulled down 16 rebounds in leading the way for the Pirate victory. Heidi Vetere assisted the effort with 8 points. Heidi and Adrianna have been the leading scorers for the Pirates in each of their games this season.
Green River took the early lead as they outscored their opponent 11-4 in the opening quarter. They continued the onslaught with a 7 point advantage in the second period to lead at the half 24-10. Despite being outscored 14-8 in the third quarter, they still led by 10 points going into the final period. They then finished off Grand by outscoring them 14-8 in the final period.
Also scoring were Charle and Ciji Vetere with 4 points each, Webster with 2 points and Leah Spadafora and Swalberg with a single point.
Against Altamont, Green River used a big opening quarter to take a 21-9 lead and putting notice that they were there to win. Altamont won the next two quarters 12-6 and 9-8 to cut the lead to 5 points before Green River won the fourth quarter 11-10 to secure the win.
Kaden Robertson hit three 3-pointers on his way to 18 points for the night, as he was the leading scorer in the ballgame. Kaleb Fail and Brent Johnson each scored 13 points and Jace Vetere added 2 points in the win.
On Saturday night, Green River won each of the first three quarters including a huge third period to get by Wayne. A huge fourth quarter by Wayne made the game closer than it really was. The Pirates outscored their opponent 11-10 in the first quarter, 9-6 in the second quarter and 22-5 in the third quarter to have 42-21 lead at the start of the final period. Wayne won that quarter 21-7 to tighten up the score.
Johnson was the leading scorer in this game as he had 17 points. Robertson and Fail each hit two 3-point shots in the game as Kaden finished with 14 points and Kaleb finished with 12 points.
Also scoring were Vetere with 2 points, Weston Vetere with a single point and Adrain Lucero with a 3-pointer.
