Green River sweeps Whitehorse in basketball

The Green River Pirate’s hosted Whitehorse last Friday night in basketball and both home teams came away with a win. The boy’s team won 51-46 after the girls had won 71-52.
Kaden Robertson had a good game as he scored 20 points in the contest to lead the Pirates to the region win. Green River is leading the region with a 4-1 record. They have three region games remaining.
Green River outscored Whitehorse in each of the first two periods to enjoy a 25-18 lead at the half. They won the first period 12-8 and the second 15-10. Whitehorse outscored the Pirates 14-12 in each of the second half quarters to narrow the gap but could not come away with the upset.
Also scoring in double figures for Green River was Kaleb Fail with 10 points. Brent Johnson was held to 9 points in the game. Weston Vetere scored 6 points, Brennan Bigelow had 3 points, Jace Vetere had 2 points and Adrian Lucero had a free throw. Weston and Kaden each had two 3-pointers in the game.
Ciji Vetere had her best game of the season in scoring 25 points to lead the Lady Pirates to a blow out of their region opponent.
After taking the early lead at 18-11 after the first period, the two teams battled to a 50-45 game after three periods. With Cigi scoring 8 points in the final period to lead the way, Green River won the quarter 21-7 to get the win. Green River is now 5-0 in region play with three region games left.
Three other Pirates ended the game in double figures. Charle Vetere scored 14 points, Heidi Vetere scored 12 points and Adrianna Cordova also scored 12 points. Whitney Bigelow ended the game with 8 points to round out the Green River scoring.
The Lady Pirates travel to Monticello this Thursday to play at 6:30 p.m. and then return home Friday to host Navajo Mountain at 4 p.m. The boys only game of the week is against Navajo Mountain Friday at 5:30 p.m.
