The Emery High Lady Spartans won their sixth straight region contest with another blowout win against the North Sanpete Lady Hawks. Final score in the contest was 75-53.
After last weeks big victory over rival Carbon, the coaching staff was just a little anxious that the Lady Spartans might just be satisfied with that win and become just a little complacent this week.
A slow start in this game may have fueled that thought as Emery found themselves behind early in this game as the Hawks got out to a 8-4 lead in the first three minutes of the game.
Even though Emery eventually righted the ship and took the lead at 9-8 on a Jodie Lundell basket, Emery fans were still just a little nervous, as it seemed every rebound was ending up in the hands of North Sanpete. Emery ended with only four first quarter rebounds, including three by Shala Pitchforth. Emery led after that first period 16-13.
All thoughts of negativity disappeared as the second quarter began. Ashley Hansen, despite having been ill the past three days which had deprived her of the want of food, got the Spartans rolling with a 3-point basket. Jodie also hit a 3-pointer the next time down court and the Spartans were off and running.
Ashley then hit three more consecutive shots including another three to lead Emery to a 31-17 lead with just over three minutes gone in the quarter. In those three minutes, Ashley scored 10 points, gathered in 2 rebounds and had a steal. Ashley confided later on that she “did not remember having shot a three-point shot before.”
Callie Seeley hit two 3-pointers later in the quarter as Emery continued to roll to a 27-10 second quarter. Emery led after the period 43-23.
Emery continued to play well in the third period as they outscored North Sanpete 15-12 to lead by 23.
North Sanpete scored 14 of the first 18 points of the final period to cut Emery’s lead to 13 points at 62-49. Emery’s defense lessened their intensity and allowed North Sanpete to have their first open looks at the basket from behind the 3-point line and the Hawks quickly took advantage. The Emery fans started to get just a little nervous at this point.
Camille Fehlberg, who had had a fairly quiet game so far with only 4 points, was inserted back into the line up and led Emery on a 9-0 run to put Emery back up by 22 points. Camille scored 6 points in those two minutes. Each team then scored 4 points each to close out the game.
Ashley tied for leading scorer in the game with Rachel Rasmussen. Rachel had quietly played a steady game as each player ended the game with 12 points. Jodie and Camille also finished in double figures as each player scored 10 points in the contest.
Natalee Hanson continued her comeback as she and Shala each scored 7 points. Shala also finished with a team high nine rebounds and four blocked shots.
Callie and Meagan Pearson each contributed 6 points, Alexis Swasey hit a single 3-pointer and Tahna Merrell had a single basket. Tahna also had at least six rebounds.
All 10 Emery players that normally see playing time scored in the contest and each of them had at least two other individual stats. Emery has several players coming off the bench that could start for other schools.
The Lady Spartans have two home games this week as they will host Juan Diego on Tuesday night and Granite on Thursday night in the Spartan Center. Varsity action begins around 7 p.m.
