The Green River High School Lady Pirates spent four days in Richfield playing in the 1-A State basketball tournament and split their four games. The Pirates lost their opener to Tabiona 48-36 to put themselves into the consolation bracket.
The next day they defeated Dugway 53-47, to send the Mustangs packing. On Friday, they defeated Piute 68-52 to send them home. On the last day, the Pirates lost to Valley 58-42.
The team finished the team in eighth place in the state with an 18-7 record. Head Coach Greg Parsons talked about his team during the tournament, “This team plays really hard. They play together, they work hard together and they work well together. It was our preseason goals to win region and to play all four days at state, we did both.” This should bode well for the future since there are only two seniors on this year’s team. They are Whitney Bigelow and Ciji Vetere.
Against Tabiona, Green River took the first quarter lead of 13-7 as they played well to start the game. Tabiona then took each of the final three quarters to win the game by 12 points.
Ciji led the way with 11 points followed by Heidi Vetere with 10 points. Charle Vetere added 7 points; Adriana Cordova had 4 points along with Brandi Webster. Green River made only one of 7 free throw attempts while Tabiona made 14 of 23.
On Wednesday, the Pirates outscored Dugway in every quarter to grab the easy win. They were never challenged in this game as they held Dugway to single digit scoring in each period.
Adriana led the way this day with 19 points followed by Whitney, who scored 8 points. Heidi, Charle, Ciji and Brandi each scored 6 points and Leah Swalberg scored 2 points.
Against Dugway, Friday Green River got a first quarter 10-point lead and then maintained that advantage over the rest of the game to claim the victory. After being tied 4-4 in the first quarter, Green River went on an 8-0 run to grab the lead that they would never relinquish.
Adriana again led the team with 27 points, as she was very effective around the basket. Adriana also had 6 steals and 8 rebounds in the game. Charle and Ciji also finished in double figures with 12 and 10 points respectively.
Heidi scored only 7 points in the game but pulled down 10 rebounds and had 3 blocked shots. Whitney scored 8 points and Brandi and McKenzie Spadafora each had 2 points in the game.
On Saturday, Valley opened up a 19-10 first quarter lead and then built that lead to 20 points before winning the game by 16 points.
Ciji and Whitney led the scoring with 10 points each. Adriana added 8 points, Charle and Brandi each had 5 points and Heidi and Leah had 2 points each.
