On June 10, Millsite State Park in partnership with the Division of Wildlife Resources and Emery County will host a special kids fishing event. On June 10, both children and adults may fish without a license. The park entrance fee is $5 per vehicle for up to eight occupants or $3 per vehicle for senior citizens (62 or older). The restaurant at the Millsite golf course will cook any cleaned fish from noon until 3 p.m. free of charge. The restaurant will also serve off the menu.
Kids under 14 may take part in knot-tying clinics and a casting competition that will begin at 8 a.m. and last until the onset of a prize drawing that will be held at 10 a.m. Participants must be registered prior to the beginning of the drawing to be eligible for prizes. Typically, every child wins some form of fishing tackle (rods, reels, tackle kits, lures, or baits). Prizes are being sponsored or have been furnished by a variety of businesses, clubs and organizations, including the Shakespeare Fishing Tackle Co., Kiwanas Club, Joy Mining, Sportsmen’s Warehouse, Emery County and the DWR.
Children who don’t have their own fishing tackle may borrow rods and reels from the DWR for use during the day. Bait, hooks and sinkers will also be available for event participants.
Fishing equipment needs to be returned by 2 p.m., but fishing fun continues the entire day. There is no charge for the event. The general public is encouraged to participate.
DWR personnel will run a tackle and information station between the hours of 8 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. They will sponsor several events, including a casting competition at 9 a.m., where winners in each age class will receive prizes. The biggest event–the prize drawing–follows at 10 a.m. Fishing fun continues throughout the day. DWR biologists will be on-hand from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. to help kids and parents become better anglers and catch more fish.
Millsite State Park is located in Ferron Canyon, about 5 miles west of the town of Ferron. Take the kids and enjoy some free fishing fun for the whole family. Circle June 10 on the calendar, and plan to join us for the festivities. For more information, contact Brent Stettler at 435-636-0266 or brentstettler@utah.gov.
