Orangeville City considers rezoning ordinance for city

Orangeville City held a public meeting recently concerning a zoning change for four lots in the city. For a number of years the lots have been zoned for agricultural purposes. The lots must have a minimum of one acre with 100 foot frontage. Due to changes in the zoning ordinance the frontage line must be a 130 foot frontage line now. Because of this, if an owner of a lot would like to make changes on the property it could possibly cause problems, since any improvement must meet the codes now established. Dennis Tuttle explained in detail the problems and why the city is trying to fix it. He said one of the disadvantages to changing to a R2800 zone is animal allowance. Before you could have three dogs and there was no limitation on all other animals. With the new code you can have two dogs with some limitations to other animals. At the time there is no problem with the animal allowance change for the current residents. Tuttle assured the owners that there will be no tax change. The zone change was approved.
The sexually orientated business ordinance was brought before the council. The new ordinance is for the welfare of the city. In the event that a so called business did come and there were no guidelines it would be very hard to go back and set new ones. The council had previously reviewed the ordinance and agreed that the two zones were OK. The Land Use Authority was congratulated on their long and hard work to get the ordinance in place.
The city council meeting started with an owner of a trailer court coming before the council asking for an allowance on a water bill. The owner said that when the city contacted her on the large water usage she immediately went to see if there was a break somewhere. With no break found she then found that one of the residents in the trailer court had a broken float in their toilet. She said the problem has fixed within a two and a half hour period. Ninety eight thousand gallons of water was used in a five month period, when usually only 49,000 gallons are used per month. The problem was not caught before five months due to the winter season. The owner said she has worked really hard to fix up the place and as a business owner cannot afford the $923.10 water bill. The council agreed that under the circumstances the water problem would have been fixed within a one month period. So they set the cost at one fifth the amount.
A resident wanted to know why there was no longer a Miss Orangeville pageant. Orangeville City said loss of interest in the pageant had caused the cancellation. The resident was assured his daughter could still enter the Miss Emery Pageant without holding the Miss Orangeville title.
Doug Johnson from the Land Use Authority spoke with the council. His only item was that a letter be written on behalf of a trailer court owner. The owner would like to renumber the trailer court so the numbers are in order and current with the address change. The trailer court property will all have the same address but different numbers on their homes. The city said a letter will be written with the approval.
Councilman, Courtney Cox gave his report on the CERT program that is available online to certify. It allows you to learn emergency preparedness to help yourself and family, then you would be available to help the community in case of a disaster. It was said to be a fascinating program. Cox also spoke of the remaining money for purchases for the new fire station. The fire station was asking for a television for training, five radios, a Dell computer, carpet upstairs and fence on the west and south side of the fire department. Most of the items have already been purchased or are in the process.
The next council report was given by Councilman James Davis. He said that the dugouts at the city park are almost finished. He is also having a few other things done to the park to finish it off. The fields at the dog pound are being worked on and will be completed soon. He would also like to use the north field and buy some soccer goal posts, so that field could be used if necessary.
Kelly Alton councilman, said there is money coming from the recreation board. He said the best way to receive any sort of funding is to present a project to the recreation board that the city needs. Alton also requested they move to get power up to the cemetery.
The next city council meeting will be held on June 8 at 7:30 p.m.
