Mayor Mike Williams explained the growing problems with coal trucks speeding through the town. He suggested acquiring a radar gun to check the speed of the trucks. Following a discussion concerning private citizens using a radar gun and taking photos of the trucks to be sent to the companies, the council decided to have Mayor Williams contact each of the company who own coal trucks coming through Emery. “We will contact each company and request suggestions about what to do concerning this problem,” said Mayor Williams.
Mistie Christiansen gave the council an update concerning the youth city council. “Our last meeting was a good one, we had lots of kids. We met with the beautification committee and it was decided that the youth will weed around the dumpster at the cemetery and the rest area in preparation for the July 24 celebration. The youth will host a dance in conjunction and it will be held on July 21,” said Christiansen.
“The youth group will sell the Emery history books as a fund raiser during Pioneer Days. It’s hard for many of the kids to get to Castle Dale to help with the lamb fry, so we will be doing another fund raiser and donate that money to the summit. On Aug. 18 we will be having a movie in the park,” concluded Christiansen.
Council person Corinne Dalton reported about the recreational vehicle park ordinance. “We are still waiting for a decision from the attorney. We will have that at the next meeting to act on,” said Council person Dalton.
Amy Sundstrom reported concerning the beautification committee. “We contacted Pam Juliano of Congressman Matheson’s office. She said to begin looking for grant money from UDOT. They will help with lights, planters, anything to fix up Main Street,” Sundstrom stated.
It was also noted that Emery has a sandstone monolith to be used for a city marker. The marker will be placed in the rest area. Sundstrom has contacted Bunderson Monuments for estimates for the marking of the stone.
In other business conducted by Emery Town, it was decided to prepare to apply to the CIB for the funding to build a fire station and town hall for offices. The paper work needs to be submitted by Dec. 1 to be considered during that funding cycle.
The next Emery Town council meeting will be held Aug. 8 at 6 p.m.
