Parker Hatt pitches for Green River.

The Green River Pirates baseball team is hot and not just because it is August in southeastern Utah. They are hot because they are on a roll and have won eight straight baseball games. Last week they defeated Piute and Tabiona and then played a game that came after press time due to the holiday weekend. They defeated Piute 7-3 and Tabiona 2-1 earlier in the week.
Coach Greg Parsons knows why his team is winning, “We are hitting the ball really well, we have really good pitching and we have really good defense.” I think that is about every facet of the game and they appear to be doing all of them well.
If the above attributes were not enough, Coach Parsons added, “I told the kids the other day that I was most impressed with how they came together as a team and how well they support each other.” So now we have a team that does things right not only on the field but off the field as well.
In the Piute game, Jace Vetere had a double and a homerun to assist Parker Hatt in getting the complete game victory. Kaleb Fail picked up the win against Tabiona as he allowed only two hits through seven innings and also struck out 12 batters.
As the season progresses, Coach Parsons feels that the best four teams in 1-A baseball are Green River, Panguitch, Wayne and Piute. I look for it to come down to Green River and Panguitch. Panguitch might have a lot of tradition on their side but the Pirates are hot in every facet of the game.
Coach Parsons finished, “We are playing well, these kids are fun to coach and fun to be around.”
That says it all.
