Utah Archives Month


Utah State Archives and Utah State Historical Society jointly will observe “Utah Archives Month” with a free lecture on Oct. 25 and six free research classes on Oct. 27. Essay and Creative Story Contest


The Farm Bureau Essay and Creative Story Contest will be held on the topic “Riches from the Soil.” Entries need to be 1,000 words or less and should deal with Utah’s agricultural industry and they may be illustrated. Entries will be accepted from age kindergarten and up. Entries may be submitted to Joy Humphrey at P.O. Box 18 in Orangeville or delivered to her at Huntington Elementary.

Annual Business Meeting


Emery County Farm Bureau will hold the annual business meeting and banquet on Oct. 19 at 7 p.m. at the Huntington Senior Citizens Center. Policies dealing with local agriculture will be discussed and an election for local board members will be held. The dinner is free of charge. All interested citizens are welcomed to attend. The meetings will be held at Emery City Hall on Oct. 12 at 7 p.m.; Orangeville library on Oct. 17 at 6 p.m.; Castle Dale on Oct. 23, time and place undecided; Huntington City Hall on Oct. 24 at 7 p.m.; Ferron City Hall on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m., for all candidates; Cleveland City Hall on Oct. 30 at 7 p.m.

Flu Shots


Flu shots will be given on Oct. 16 at the Health Department in Castle Dale from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. and 1-4 p.m. Bring insurance cards and information. The cost is $22. Due to late shipment of vaccine, they will have limited vaccine for this clinic right now.

Food Handler’s Class


Food handler’s classes will be held on Oct. 19, Nov. 16 and Dec. 14 at 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Health Department, 25 West Main in Castle Dale. They will also be held on Oct. 18, Nov. 15 and Dec. 6 at 9 a.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Health Department, 28 South 100 East in Price. Business Expo/Job Fair

Christmas Extravaganza


The annual Christmas Extravaganza will be held Dec. 2 at the Emery County Recreational Center in Castle Dale. We are looking for people to provide entertainment that day from 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Performances could be any type of musical number, dramatic readings, poetry, stories, dance, drill or any numbers that add to our holiday event.

Goblin Valley State Park


On Oct. 14 the Goblin Valley State Park in Green River will host a Junior Ranger Program. Learn about the wildlife that calls Goblin Valley home. Find out what it might be like to live in the desert. Meet at 9:30 a.m. at the Observation Point shelter. This program is geared to children 6-12, but everyone is welcome. They will also be doing A Seed’s Need on Oct 14: Follow the journey of a plant seed’s life and learn about Goblin Valley’s rocks and wildlife. Prehistory Week Poster Contest


State History announces the 2007 Utah Prehistory Week Poster Contest. The winning poster will be professionally printed and distributed nationwide to promote Utah’s exciting past, there will also be cash awards. Festive Friday


Getting ready for the holidays? Come to the annual Festive Friday presentations by Utah State University Extension. This year’s theme is “Untangle Christmas”. Emery County Veterans

An ATV permit class will be held Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. at the old Courthouse building in Castle Dale. For more information contact Mark H Williams at 381-2493. Preregistration can be done at Emery County Rec. This class is to make youth ages 8-16 legal to drive on public lands.

Free Archaeology Class

American Legion Fundraiser Raffle


The American Legion Post 73 is sponsoring two raffles to raise funds to help needy military families. Tickets can be purchased at Jones Ace Hardware, Desertview Federal Credit Union, Maverik in Huntington and Castle Dale, BK’s Stop and Shop, Wards 4X4, Hart’s, and Magnusons. Be generous, the families need your support.

Domestic Violence Awareness


October is domestic violence awareness month and in conjunction with that the Emery County Domestice Violence Coalition will host their eighth annual October Awareness Program on Oct. 18 from noon-1 p.m. on the second floor of the old courthouse. It is free to the public and lunch will be served. Katie Ann Sutton, Utah’s Domestic Violence Council director, will be the guest speaker.

Huntington Fall Clean Up


The city will pick up limbs and branches. Everything else, haul to one of the dumpsters. Dumpster locations are 395 West Center and 150 East 300 South. Contractors are not allowed to use these dumpsters. Do not put any limbs on the street after Oct. 15. any limbs putout after this date will not be picked up an a citation will be issued.

Huntington Burn Season


Open burn season in Huntington City will be Sept. 23-Oct. 22. Burn permits are required and may be picked up at city hall. All burning must be done from 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

Emery County Community Theatre


Tryouts for the Emery County Community Theatre production of Cinderella will be held Oct. 18-19 in the Emery High School chorus room from 7-9 p.m. each evening. Cinderella will be performed Feb. 8-10 and 12. Tryout packets are available at your local library. There are no children’s part this year, unfortunately.

Emery County Quilt Guild


The Emery County Quilt Guild will be held on the first Tuesday of every month at the Huntington Senior Citizen Center. Everyone is welcomed.

Gingerbread House Festival


The Gingerbread House Festival, a new event in Emery County, will be held Dec. 1-2 at the Emery County Recreation Center. Admission is free. Everyone who wants to participate should build a gingerbread house and bring it to the festival. If house aren’t your style, try a sleigh or a gingerbread man or woman. These can be done by a group, family or individual. Each creation must be 80 percent edible, and the winners of the house division will be eligible to compete at the Utah County Gingerbread House competiton. Master Clubs


Kids, ages 6-12, you are welcome to Master Club at the First Baptist Church in Ferron. It will be held every Wednesday night, beginning Sept. 13, from 7-8:30 p.m. At Master Club, you will enjoy games, songs, Bible lessons, crafts, and skills learning.

Spartan Flags


The Emery High Spartan Booster club is selling flags as a fund raiser and to show support of the student athletes. The flags may be hung up whenever there is a home game. Veterans of Foreign Wars


A field service officer from the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be at the Price Workforce Service Center on Oct. 26 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. This is a free service to assist veterans, widows and dependents in understanding and applying for rightful VA benefits.

Museum Donations


The Museum of the San Rafael is seeking funds to design, build and install full-size, life like sculptures of three dinosaurs and a mammoth. The cost is $149,000. Donations can be made to Museum of the San Rafael, P.O. Box 1088, Castle Dale.

Amplified Cordless Phone For Hard of Hearing


For Utahns living with hearing loss and limited mobility, an amplified cordless phone is now available through Relay Utah, a division of the State of Utah Public Service Commission to help meet the needs of the hard of hearing who also experience mobility limitations with wheelchair, walker or oxygen use. The amplified cordless phones are available, at no charge, to hard of hearing individuals in Utah who currently participate in the Supplemental Security Income program, Medicaid and other Department of Human Service or Public Assistance programs. A local veterans employment representative visits the Castle Dale DWS Office the first Wednesday of each month. Tip Line for Drug Violations


A tip line has been introduced in Emery County. The Emery County drug task force is requesting help from the residents to report any suspicious drug activity. The number is 381-2888, and all callers will remain anonymous. It is very important for citizens to be actively involved in helping remove drugs users and pushers from Emery County.

CASA Volunteers Needed


Each year hundreds of children in Emery and Carbon counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children. Utah Valley Cancer Center, located at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center has a new toll-free phone number.
