Green River High School hosted the boys and girls basketball teams of Provo’s Meridian High School last week and came away with two lopsided victories. The Lady Pirates won 85-28 and the Pirates won 72-34.
With the win, the boys’ team record stood at 3-0. Earlier in the season they had defeated Grand High 66-55 and Tabiona High 53-49.
The girl’s record stood at 4-0 with the victory. The Lady Pirates had earlier defeated Escalante 75-31, Bryce Valley 55-49 and Grand 55-24. The girls did suffer their first loss after this game. Piute defeated Green River 55-49 last Friday night.
Against Meridian, the Lady Pirates broke the game wide open in the first five minutes and then kept up the pressure to win convincingly. They led 27-7 after the first quarter and 48-13 at the half.
Leading scorer in the game was Heidi Vetere with 32 points. Adriana Cordova followed with 17 points and Brandi Webster added 16 points in the rout. Also scoring were Charly Vetere with 8 points, McKenzie Spadafora with 6 points and Leah Swalberg, Crosby Hatt and Lindsey Spadafora with 2 points each.
Although they suffered a loss at Piute, the Green River team appears to be a team that will be reckoned with as the season goes on. Piute is a team that has every player from last year back and should also be in the hunt for a championship. Green River defeated Piute in last season’s state playoffs.
The boys’ team was just as dominant. They opened with a 28-12 first quarter. This team pushed the ball at every opportunity and scored at will in the period. At the half the score was 36-20 as the bench got the opportunity to play. They played with the same intensity but were just unable to get the ball to go into the basket. The Pirates then put away Meridian for good in the third period 22-6.
Scoring for the Pirates were Kaden Robertson with 21 points, Kaleb Fail with 19 points and Brent Johnson with 15 points. Also scoring were Wayde Mecham with 6, Parker Hatt with 4, Weston Vetere with 3 and Brennan Bigelow and Adrian Lucero with 2 points each.
