Pirates, Lady Pirates lead region, win 3 each

Jace Vetere looks for a way past the defender.

Both Green River High School basketball teams continued their winning ways with three wins apiece over region foes the last two weeks. The boy’s team defeated Navajo Mountain 82-53 and then followed that up on Saturday night with a 62-32 win at Monument Valley. They then won their only region game of last week, a 51-39 win over Whitehorse. With the wins, the boy’s season record is 12-3 and they are undefeated in region.
The Lady Pirates continued their absolute domination of region play with wins over the same three schools. They defeated Navajo Mountain 74-43, Monument Valley 78-33 and Whitehorse 67-32. The ladies are now 15-2 for the season and 6-0 in region play. They have averaged a 38-point spread differential in their six region games.
Heidi Vetere led the Pirates in scoring in all three games. She averaged 30.3 points per game in these games. She scored 36 against Monument Valley, 34 against Navajo Mountain and 21 against Whitehorse.
Adriana Cordova scored 52 points in the three games for a 17.3 average. McKenzie Spadafora averaged 5 points per game, Brandi Webster averaged 9 points per game, Charle Vetere averaged 8 points per game. Leah Swalberg scored 4 points for the three games, Lindsey Spadafora scored 5 points and Crosby Hatt scored 2 points in the wins.
Green River used a big first half against Whitehorse to gain the advantage. They led 33-4 at the half. Against Monument Valley, after averaging a 9-point advantage in each of the first three quarters, they finished off the game with a 25-7 fourth quarter. Against Navajo Mountain, they used a 36-16 second half difference.
The girls have three games left before tournament games begin. They travel to Monticello with the boys this Friday night.
The boy’s team is led in scoring by their big three. Brent Johnson is 8th in 1-A basketball scoring with a 17.15 average. He scored 18, 16 and 9 points in the three region games. Kaden Robertson is 12th in scoring with a 15.92 average and Kaleb Fail is 18th in scoring with a 15.31 scoring average.
Kaden scored 17, 17 and 14 points in the games and Kaleb scored 27, 17 and 25 points in the games to actually end up raising his average. In the Whitehorse game, Kaleb had six 3-pointers.
Jace Vetere scored 25 points in the three games, Brennan Bigelow scored 4 points and Tyson Johnson, Wayde Mecham and Weston Vetere each scored 2 points for the week.
For the boys, they used a good third quarter to defeat Whitehorse. Leading at the half 24-23, they out scored their opponent 17-4 in that period to breeze to a win. Against Navajo Mountain, they used a 26-8 first quarter burst to grab the lead and were never threatened thereafter. Against Monument Valley, they used a 18-7 second quarter and 20-7 third quarter to gain the advantage.
