With two wins over the last 10 days, the Green River Pirate boy’s basketball team is now ready and headed for Richfield to play in this season’s 1-A State tournament held at the Sevier Valley Center.
The Pirates finished first in region 19 play with a 7-1 record and finished with a 17-4 record overall. At the tournament, the boys look to improve upon last year’s eighth place finish.
The Pirates will open the tournament against the winner of West Ridge, who finished fourth in region 17, and Altamont, who finished fourth in region 16. With a win on the first day, they would then play the winner of Meridian and Piute. Meridian finished second in region 18 and Piute finished second in region 15. Green River defeated Meridian 72-34 in December. Also in Green River’s half of the bracket are Duchesne and Layton Christian, both region winners. Duchesne was first in region 16 and Layton was first in region 17.
Green River defeated Altamont two weeks ago in their last non-region game of the year. They won the game 77-60. Green River outscored Altamont in every single quarter to get the win.
Kaden Robertson led the team with 25 points and Kaleb Fail added 22 points. Jace Vetere also had 16 points and Brent Johnson also finished in double figures with 12 points. Brennan Bigelow also scored with 2 points.
Green River closed out the season with an 82-52 victory over region rival Monticello. Green River again outscored their opponent in every quarter.
Scoring for the Pirates were Robertson with 27 points, Fail with 21 points, Vetere with 12 points and Johnson with 11 points. Bigelow added 4 points, Wayde Mecham also had 4 points and Adrian Lucero scored 3 points.
The Green River game will be at 7 p.m. Wednesday night.
