New Beginnings

Art and Soup

Emery County Babe Ruth Sign Ups


Babe Ruth sign-ups for ages 13-15 will be held March 21 at Castle Dale Recreation Center from 6-8 p.m. Cost – $65 per participant.

Free Packet Of Family Photos


Call the Extension office at: 381-2381. The packet includes a 16×20, 4-8×10’s, 4-5×7’s and 16 wallets. All you have to do is sell 10 certificates for $10. The certificate entitles the purchaser to a 16×20 family portrait.This is a fundraiser for the Emery County 4-H and your support is greatly appreciated. Photos will be back in time for Mother’s Day.

Historical Society


The Emery County Historical Society’s March general meeting will be on March 22 at 6:30 p.m. at the Museum of the San Rafael. Dr. Allan Kent Powell with the Utah State Historical Society will be the guest speaker. His topic will be on Utah’s Experience with German Prisoners of WWI and WWII. Christine Jensen will entertain with musical selections.

Easter Egg Hunt


The Cleveland and Elmo youth town councils will sponsor this years Easter Egg Hunt on March 31 at 12 noon. All preschool and elementary age children are invited to meet in front of the Cleveland Town Hall. Please don’t be late, we start promptly at noon. Basketball Tournament


Emery High School Men and Women Alumni Basketball Tournament sponsored by Emery County Recreation will be on April 21 from 8 a.m.- 8 p.m. There is a $20 entry fee per person. All Star Cheerleading


Emery all star cheerleading competition team tryouts, April 27 and 30 at 4 p.m. Ages 9-18. Deposits are required. Regular classes for ages 3-11 start in September, no tryouts necessary. For more information call 687-2632.

Emery High Rodeo Team


The Emery High Rodeo team is preparing for their 2007 rodeo. It will be held April 20-21 at the Castle Dale arena. Sponsorships from local businesses help make this possible. To sponsor the rodeo call VaLynn Sitterud at 687-9019.

Know Before You Go


An ATV permit class will be held March 22 at the old Courthouse building beginning at 7 p.m. for ages 8-16 to be legal to drive on public lands. Engineering Program


The Utah State University annual Engineering State program will be held on June 11-14. For all high school students entering their junior or senior year who have a strong interest in math, science, technology or aviation and display citizenship excellence on their scholastic record. Miss Emery Pageant


The Miss Emery scholarship pageant will be held on July 14 at 7 p.m. Contestants must be 17 years of age by Sept. 1 to be in the pageant. Most juniors qualify. Veterans of Foreign Wars


A field service officer from the Veterans of Foreign Wars will be at the Price Workforce Service Center on March 22 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. This is a free service to assist veterans, widows and dependents in understanding and applying for rightful VA benefits.

Shuttle Service for Veterans


There are 150,000 veterans in Utah and many of them live in the southern parts of the state. For this reason the VA has sponsored a shuttle service to carry all veterans who cannot drive to the Salt Lake Medical Center for specialty treatment. Under the auspices of the Disabled American Veterans, a new 2005 Ford Freestar Minivan was purchased in 2005 through fund raising efforts in St. George. That van now has more than 120,000 miles logged and will need to be replaced in 2007. Since the service is offered to all veterans in Southern Utah, we are asking them for help in raising the funds necessary to purchase another this time a 12 passenger since the demand has grown. The Dixie Chapter of the DAV is caretaker of the funds and has an account in Wells Fargo Bank to which donations may be made. All are tax deductible under the DAV Tax ID 8761512361. The account is named The Dixie Chapter 7 Disabled American Veterans Van Replacement Fund and can be accessed for donation at any Wells Fargo branch. Programs for High School Students


The Interamerican University studies Institute will offer two programs to Costa Rica and Pura Vida this summer. The programs are open to students between the ages of 15-17 who will have completed two years of high school Spanish by June. Scholarships are also available. Applications are due by Feb. 9, 2007. Habitat for Humanity


Habitat for Humanity of Castle Country is accepting home applications. Appicants must complete 20 hours of work for the group, have been turned down for a conventinonal home loan and have a stable income. Volunteers and board members are needed. The 2007 TRUTH from Youth Anti-tabacco advertising contest is giving fourth and fifth graders the opportunity to become a big-time producer. Local Veterans Employment Representative


A local veterans employment representative visits the Castle Dale DWS Office the first Wednesday of each month. Appointments can also be arranged on other days by contacting Steve Wilkinson at (435) 636-2343. The LVER is also available Monday through Friday at Department of Workforce Services, 475 West Price River Drive, for questions about VA benefits, assistance with VA applications, employment assistance and other veterans issues. Tip Line for Drug Violations


A tip line has been introduced in Emery County. The Emery County drug task force is requesting help from the residents to report any suspicious drug activity. The number is 381-2888, and all callers will remain anonymous. It is very important for citizens to be actively involved in helping remove drugs users and pushers from Emery County.

CASA Volunteers Needed


Each year hundreds of children in Emery and Carbon counties become wards of the juvenile court system due to child abuse, neglect or abandonment. The child welfare system can only devote so much time and attention to each individual case and, consequently, to each individual child. CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate) Volunteers are ordinary men and women who find it in their hearts and their schedules to help these abused and neglected children.
