Bike Festival


The San Rafael Swell Mountain Bike Festival will be held May 18-20. They will provide an event T-shirt, a spaghetti dinner on Friday, a pancake breakfast and Dutch oven dinner on Saturday and a continental breakfast on Sunday. CEU Prehistoric Museum Events


May 10 at 7 p.m. The Buffalo Soldiers in Utah by Dr. Ronald Coleman. The cost is free. May 12 from 10 a.m.- 3 p.m. Family Activity Day. They will have face painting, rock art wall, clay pottery and figurines and more. The cost is free. May 17-20 at the John Wesley Powell Museum in Green River. Waterfowl Viewing


The Division of Wildlife Resources will sponsor a water bird viewing event on May 5 at Desert Lake from 8 a.m.-noon. Desert Lake is located east of the town of Elmo. Take State Highway 10 to the Elmo turn-off (State Route 155). Travel to Elmo. On Main Street, travel east out of town until you see a sign for the Cleveland-Lloyd Dinosaur Quarry. Follow the sign. In less than a mile, you will arrive at Desert Lake. Signs will direct you to the viewing locations.

Ferron Yard Sale and Plant Exchange


The City of Ferron is having a community wide yard sale and plant exchange. It’s on May 19, at Mayor’s Park, from 8 a.m. -1 p.m. Lots of good items andcrafts. The cost to be a seller is free but you must register with City Hall at 384-2350. If you have extra plants, seeds or flowers (after you thin your garden) bring them to the park to share with others. The plants and flowers are free.

Open House for Suitablility Study


The US Forest Service and the State of Utah will host an open house to inform the public of a suitability study for wild and scenic river segments on Huntington Creek and the Left Hand Fork of Huntington Creek. The open house will be at the Museum of the old Courthouse in Castle Dale on May 9 from 4-8 p.m.

Grants for Sustaining Agriculture


Applications are now available for more than $2 million in grants focusing on research and education to sustain agriculture in the West. Applications can be obtained from the Western SARE Web site http://wsare.usu.edu, by calling 435-797-2257, or by emailing wsare@ext.usu.edu.

Men’s and Women’s Slow Pitch Softball


Emery County Recreation is currently registering teams for women’s slow pitch softball and men’s slow pitch softball. Men’s league will be a metal bat league. All forms must be returned to the recreation office no later than May 18. Full registration fee must accompany the form. Forms may be picked up at the recreation office located at 75 South 400 East, Castle Dale, or can be downloaded from the Web site www.emerycounty.com/rec. ECHS Alumni Basketball Tournament


The Emery County High School alumni basketball tournament will be held May 5 at 2 p.m. in the old gym. Money raised will be donated to the EHS athletic department. Millsite Ladies Golf Association Opening Social


The Millisite Ladies Golf Association will host their opening social on May 8 at Millsite Restaurant at 6:30 p.m. A light dinner will be served. League play will begin May 15. Trek To The Buckhorn


The Emery County Historical Society is having a trek to the Buckhorn on May 5 at 10 a.m. Meet at the corrals east of Castle Dale. Bring a potluck dish, your own drinks, chair, bug spray, camera, and jacket. Hot dogs will be furnished. Touring cars will be appropriate. Tour guides will be Bert Oman and Mervin Miles. Annual Yard Sale at Desert Edge Christian Chapel

Scofield State Park Hosts Fishing Tournament


Huntington – Scofield State Park staff will host a fishing tournament May 12 from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Registration begins May 2 at 8 a.m. by phone or in person and is limited to 49 participants. Any no-shows will be filled after 7:30 a.m. on a first come, first served basis tournament day. Only one fish per participant will be entered and possession limit is eight. Soldiers Addresses Needed


American Legion Auxiliary #42 of Ferron is looking for addresses from people of Emery County that have loved ones proudly serving our country in a war zone such as Iraq and Afghanistan. We have a program started three years ago called Operation Home Support which we send packages to soldiers, but we need help from Emery County residents with the names and addresses of your loved ones that are serving. They need a package from Operation Home Support to let them know they aren’t forgotten and that we care and support them. Spring Rendezvous


Bookcliff Muzzleloader club annual Spring Shoot at Buckhorn Draw will be held on May 4-6. A team shoot will start on May 4 at 6:30 p.m. On Saturday the aggregate black powder shoot which includes paper targets and a silhouette walk will begin at 9:30 a.m. Registration will be Friday night and Saturday morning beginning at 7:30 a.m. There will be a tomahawk throw, mountain man run and flintlock shoot after the aggregate. Old Mine Maps


The Utah Geological Survey is looking for old abandoned coal mine maps. The maps will only be borrowed for a digital image and then will be returned to the owners. For more information go to www.geology.utah.gov.

Retreat for Girls


Retreat for Girls is for girls LDS girls ages 12-15, 11 year olds can come upon request. The program is held at Utah State University on June 25-29. Food Handler’s Classes

Cleveland Fire Department Car Washes


Cleveland Fire Department will hold a fund raising car wash on May 12 at 10 a.m. Come and show your support to the Fire Department members for all their hard work and hours that go into being a volunteer fireman.

Miss Cleveland Pageant

Emery County Gun Club


New, youth ages 10-18 and all women shoot at reduced price from 5-7 p.m. Everyone is welcome from 7 p.m. on. New, A and B class for all games, provides everyone with an equal chance to win. Next shoot is May 12.

Emery Junior Miss Pageant


The Emery Junior Miss Pageant will be held June 2 at 5 p.m. at Huntington Elementary. Ages 5-8. Winner will accompany Miss Emery, Kristine Johansen, to the Miss Utah competition June 26-30 in Salt Lake City at Capitol Theater. Participants will be judged on two minute talent, a poem entitled Why is Emery County a Great Place to Live, Work and Play which they have written, and an on stage question. $40 registration fee. Miss Emery Pageant


The Miss Emery scholarship pageant will be held on July 14 at 7 p.m. Contestants must be 17 years of age by Sept. 1 to be in the pageant. Most juniors qualify. Competition includes talent, interview, swimwear, on-stage question and evening gown.Scholarships for the pageant winner are queen, $1,200, first attendant, $700, second attendant, $500.

Local Veterans Employment Representative


A local veterans employment representative visits the Castle Dale DWS Office the first Wednesday of each month. Tip Line for Drug Violations


A tip line has been introduced in Emery County. The Emery County drug task force is requesting help from the residents to report any suspicious drug activity. The number is 381-2888, and all callers will remain anonymous. It is very important for citizens to be actively involved in helping remove drugs users and pushers from Emery County.
