Lady Spartans open season at South Sevier

By By

The 2007-08 basketball season opened for the Emery High Lady Spartans last Tuesday night with a narrow 56-45 loss to South Sevier High School in Monroe. This game featured two reigning state champions, Emery in 3-A and South Sevier in 2-A in this Hall of Fame game. While the Spartans had several player losses due to graduation, the Rams returned their entire roster from last season.
Although the final score has the Rams winning by 11 points, the game was much closer than this up to the closing minute when Emery started fouling to attempt to get the ball back. South Sevier made eight of 10 free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
Emery started out slow but then so did the Rams. The score after the first quarter was 6-4 for South Sevier. Michonne Robertson, a senior transfer to Emery, made two free throws and Meagan Pearson hit a basket for Emery’s points in that quarter. Emery outscored South Sevier in the second quarter 18-12 to take a four point lead into the locker room. Jodi Robertson led the Spartans with 10 points, including a pair of 3-pointers. Tiffany Tuttle scored four points on two baskets.
The third quarter belonged to South Sevier as they outscored Emery 15-7 in the period. Emery could not buy a basket in the period as they continued a game long problem of being able to get off a good shot but the ball would not go in the basket. Frankie Komar had a 3-pointer and Jodi and Tiffany each had a basket for the Spartan scoring.
Emery lost the last period 23-16. In the period, Pearson led the way with six points. Jodi added four more points to finish with a team high 17 points. Jodi also had a rebound, three assists, five steals and four blocked shots.
For the game, Emery just did not shoot well. Emery made only 10 of 34 regular shot attempts. Emery missed 13 shots taken in the paint. Emery also only hit five of 14 3-point shot attempts and made only 10 0f 20 free throw attempts.
Michonne grabbed eight of the team’s 23 rebounds. Emery had 11 assists, 16 steals and seven blocked shots. Meagan had four steals, three rebounds and two assists while scoring eight points.
Also scoring for the Spartans were Lacey Montgomery with one point, Jenni Stinson with two points, Caitlin Hansen and Frankie Komar with three points and Michonne and Tiffany with six points each.
Emery purposely has a tough preseason schedule. Head Coach Steven Gordon figures that his team will only get better if they play good competition. The team continues their tough schedule when they travel to North Sevier this week and then host Canyon View. North Sevier is a top 2-A team and Canyon View has maybe the best player back in 3-A basketball with Cassie Platt. Emery played well in the game and, especially for a season opener on the road, did most things right except get the ball to actually go through the hoop. Last season starter ShiAnne Allred is still on the injured list after having knee surgery and hopes to be back by late December.
