The Emery County swimming pool is under construction at the site of approximately 800 North and 100 East. This is just off the Spartan Center street. Hughes Construction is the contractor for the pool project.
Commissioner Drew Sitterud said the project is still moving along although the cold weather has slowed the progress somewhat. In commission meeting on Jan. 22 a change order was approved which reduced the price of the rebar for a savings to the county.
A pool committee has been meeting for several months concerning the pool colors and the toys the pool will be equipped with.
Commissioner Sitterud reported the block walls will begin to arise with the interior wall being constructed first. There will be a 15-foot wall hanging in the air. “It’s a big, huge wall,” said Commissioner Sitterud.
The pool will be a state of the art facility with an indoor pool and an outdoor pool. The outdoor pool will have a large toy play structure with slides and a current channel as well as fountains to spray the children.
The facility will have two large dressing rooms one for women and one for men as well as a family dressing room area, for parents with small children.
The two pools will be separated by a large partition folding door with clear panels for visibility between the two pools. There will be an area with a snack bar and a spot for video games.
Commissioner Sitterud wants the pool to be used for large activities and there will be a birthday room where birthday parties or other gatherings can be held. Groups will be able to use the pool facility for family parties, church groups, businesses, etc. The pool can be rented by these groups for private parties. Private parties will be able to barbeque and use the party room facilities.
The pool will be an asset for the Emery County School District who donated the land on which the pool is being constructed. The school district is paying for the parking lot and the score board for the facility. Emery High is one of only two 3A schools without a swimming team program.
The school will now be able to host meets and the necessary equipment for these meets will be installed such as the timers and lane dividers. The pool can also be used for school parties. Plans are underway for each of the elementary schools to be able to use the pool as well as the older students.
Green River High and Book Cliff Elementary students will be bused to use the new pool twice each year.
Emery High’s school colors, gold, black and grey have been incorporated into the pool’s decorating scheme with the choices for the lockers, walls and other features of the pool.
The indoor pool will boast a diving board for swimmers. A basketball hoop may also be installed for some indoor style pool basketball. The indoor pool will also have a volleyball net so the pool goers can play volleyball. The pool will range from 4-10 ft. deep. The pool will have a wrought iron decorative fence around its perimeter.
The estimated date of completion will be summer of 2008. The Castle Dale pool closed in 2006 and the county was without a pool for 2007. Commissioners look forward to the opening of the new pool to serve the recreational needs of the Emery County citizens.
