High school realignment draft moves Emery

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports writer

The first draft of the new high school realignment that would take effect in the 2009 school year is out and 3-A sports is affected. Just as today, there would be 4 regions in the new 3-A alignment. Proposed to leave the 3-A ranks to the 4-A ranks would be Logan, Uintah and Ogden. Proposed to move to 3-A will be 2-A teams American Leadership Academy, Juab, Manti and Richfield.
The proposed draft would put Emery High and Carbon High in separate regions. Emery would be in a region with Delta, North Sanpete, Manti and Juab. Carbon would go with ALA, Park City, Juan Diego, Union and Wasatch.
The enrollment requirements for the new alignment would be 1-A 0-149, 2-A 150-399, 3-A 400-999, 4-A 1000-1600 and 5-A over 1600.
In the 3-A ranks, Park City has 992 students, Bear River 976 students, Ben Lomond 976 students, Wasatch 898 students and Hurricane with 905 students.
Emery would have 481 students and Carbon 796 students. Emery would be similar in number of students with all their proposed region teams. Grantsville and Richfield would be the only other two schools with less than 500 students. Grand is the only 2-A school out of 19 that has more than 300 students.
This is only a draft and probably will be altered at least four more times before the final draft is accepted on June 10 of this year.
