Monticello defeats Green River teams

In region play last week, Monticello defeated both Green River High School teams. The Lady Pirates lost 46-29 and then the boys lost 75-47. On Saturday of last week, Green River played Navajo Mountain and returned to winning with a 68-33 victory. The Lady Pirates now lead the region race with a 5-1 record and have secured at least second place in region play and probably at least a tie for the region crown.
Brandi Webster, the second leading scorer in 1-A basketball with 20.56 scoring average, led the team in the two games. Brandi had 15 points against Monticello and 18 points against Navajo Mountain. In addition, Brandi is the second leading rebounder in the state of Utah with a 10.25 average per game.
Monticello took the first quarter lead at 10-6, won the second period 6-4 and then put the game away in the third quarter as they outscored Green River 17-2 in the period to lead 33-12. Also scoring in the game were Crosby Hatt with 6 points and Leah Swalberg and Jill Vetere with 4 points each.
In the Saturday night game, Green River won every quarter to get back on the winning path. The Pirates won the first period 14-4, the second period 14-11, the third period 17-12 and the final quarter 18-6.
Nine different Pirates scored in the game. After Webster, Leah Swalberg scored 12 points, Sara Swalberg scored 9 points, Crosby Hatt scored 7 points, Jill Vetere and Bailie Packer each scored 6 points, Tracy Engleman and Cady Mecham each scored 4 points and Brittney Bastian scored 2 points.
For the season, Leah Swalberg and Crosby Hatt lead the team in assists with 1.92 per game. They also lead in steals with 2.08 steals per game. Leah averages 7.38 points per game, Crosby 6.62 points per game and Jill averages 5.25 points per game.
In the boy’s loss to Monticello, Green River trailed 18-7 after the first quarter, 37-15 at the half and 58-30 after three periods before both teams scored 17 points in the final quarter.
Kayden Mecham and Tyson Johnson led the team with 12 points each. Brennan Bigelow and Luis Mendoza each scored 8 points in the game and Jason Johnson scored 7 points. Mendoza hit a pair of 3-pointers for the Pirates.
Both teams travel to Altamont this Thursday to play a non-region contest and then both return home Saturday night to host Monument Valley.
