Armed robbery in Green River

By By

At approximately 4 a.m. on March 23 the Emery County Dispatch call center received a 911 call from Ace Gunsolley. He is the night clerk at the Holiday Inn Express. He reported an armed robbery had just occurred at the hotel. Gunsolley stated that a male approximately 6 ft. 4 inches around 240 pounds had entered the hotel lobby and he had told Gunsolley, he had a gun in his pocket and he wanted all the cash. The clerk gave the robber all the cash he had access to and then the suspect left the area.
Deputy Jeff Newland and Trooper Bronson Wood were both on duty just east of Green River and both arrived within three to five minute of being dispatched. They didn’t have a vehicle description at that time. Additional deputies responded and the investigation ensued. The deputies were then able to get a vehicle description from the Super 8 Motel and that description was given to the deputies. Just west of milepost 127, Deputy Jeff Weber located a vehicle matching the description of the vehicle involved in the armed robbery. The vehicle was off the side of the interstate and was unoccupied.
While processing the vehicle registration, a male approached the abandoned car from the east bound lane carrying a gas can. The subject then told Deputy Weber that it was his car and he had ran out of gas and walked into Salina. A female individual had brought him back out to his car. Deputy Weber became highly suspicious that this could be the subject involved in the robbery. He attempted to further question the subject. The subject gained access to his vehicle and headed westbound. Deputy Wewas able to shoot out the driver side rear tire. Deputy Weber was in pursuit of the suspect vehicle, on the westbound side of I-70, just east of the Ghost Rocks Rest Area. The suspect vehicle began to distance itself from from the deputy.
The deputy lost sight of the suspect vehicle. At this point the suspect vehicle left the highway and ran into a ravine.
The deputy continued westbound as he didn’t see the suspect vehicle in the ravine.
An individual made contact with Sgt. Mitch Vetere informing him that a black car was down in a ravine a few miles back.
The individual took Sgt. Vetere to where the vehicle had been seen. Several deputies coming westbound and eastbound from Fremont Junction continued to search for the vehicle. Deputy Doug Downard, Trooper Glen Begay, Det. John Barnett and Deputy Weber located the vehicle with the suspect still in the vehicle at milepost 123. The suspect was taken into custody safely without further incident.
It is unknown who the man is at this time as he didn’t have any identification on his person and is not cooperating with the Emery County Sheriff’s Office.
The car the man was driving was stolen from Nebraska.
