The Emery High Lady Spartan softball team split their games last week to now have a 16-4 season record. On Monday, Emery made up a game with North Sevier that had been weathered out and won in Salina 9-4. Emery then traveled to Juan Diego on Friday and lost 4-0. The game had been scheduled for Thursday but got rained out.
The Juan Diego loss was the third of the season for the Emery team, as they cannot break the jinx that the Soaring Eagles seem to have over this team. Emery could also not find a way to get on base in this game. Only Adriane Weihing became a base runner for Emery and she got hit by a pitch as Emery went hitless.
In this game, Emery struck out 13 times. Only Markette Tanner and Leslee Lake even got the ball to the outfield as both of them flew out.
Emery held Juan Diego scoreless until the fourth inning when they scored a run. Juan Diego then scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to put the game away. With the win, Juan Diego takes the region championship and the Lady Spartans finish second in Region 8 play.
On Monday, Emery opened the game at Salina by scoring four times in the top of the first inning. Jalee Jensen led off with a walk and Weihing followed with a walk. After a pair of strikeouts, Bailey Kay walked, Whitney Allen singled and Candice Norton doubled to centerfield.
Emery added another run in the top of the second inning. Jensen got hit by a pitch, stole second base and scored on a single by Chelsea Skinner. North Sevier scored two in the bottom of the second and two more in the bottom of the third inning to keep the game close.
Emery got some breathing room with two more runs scoring in the top of the fourth inning. Jensen and Skinner both would get on base by walking and a combination of stolen bases and passed balls allowed them both to score.
Emery added two insurance runs in the top of the sixth inning. Jensen singled and Weihing walked and both would score again on a combination of stolen bases and passed balls.
Although Emery would only get six base hits in the game, they complemented that with 13 walks given up by North Sevier pitching.
Emery now enters the last week of the season as they travel to North Sanpete on Tuesday and host Carbon on Thursday. Both days will be single games only as Emery has already defeated both teams twice this season.
