The San Rafael Back Country Horseman sponsored a regional project in cooperation with the United States Forest Service to clear the trails in Huntington Canyon. The primary target was the trails that go up on East, Candland, and Seeley Mountains. Event organizer Wayne Ludington said, “We were very successful clearing over 28 miles of trail. Twenty volunteers came from all over the state to participate and totaled an estimated 2,000 miles traveled to the work area. They donated $1,150 in equipment time, utilized 23 riding and pack animals for a total of 218 stock hours, and worked 166 hours in clearing the trails. The San Rafael Back Country Horseman sponsored a Dutch oven dinner on Saturday night for everyone that worked.
“We met in Huntington Canyon and split up into work groups. We were able to clean more than 28 miles of trail including Mill Canyon, Horse Canyon, Mill Fork Canyon, Gentry Hollow, Sawmill, Stuart Guard station trail, Left Fork of Huntington, and parts of Bull Pasture and Wild Cattle. A new section of trail was put in to skirt the Old Folks Flat Campground. This will allow hikers, bikers and horses to travel between the Stuart Guard Station and Mill Canyon and stay out of the campgrounds.”
