Letter to the Editor: Get Our priorities straight

By COLTON LEAVITT Orangeville

Editor,
I am thoroughly disgusted with our justice system due to recent rulings. In the Salt Lake Tribune, an article was written concerning a woman who left her child in a car on a hot day. Police said that the temperature inside the car might have reached a sweltering 120 degrees. The five month old was in the car for two hours before the mother, Kamilyn Hadley, returned to find her son close to death. The boy died three days later in the hospital. The woman claimed that she forgot her child in the car because she was bearing some “heavy burdens”. I do not know how you could possibly forget your own child in a car to go visit with a work client. The woman was sentenced to probation and counseling.
Earlier, before this article came out, a different one was written about a man who could not take care of 14 terrier-mix puppies. As a result of his incapability, he decided to kill the puppies by putting them in a plastic bag to suffocate overnight. The next day, assuming the puppies were dead, he dumped them in a dumpster where they were found by a store employee. The man pled guilty to 13 counts of class A misdemeanor animal cruelty for the puppies that died and one count of class B misdemeanor for attempted animal cruelty for the single puppy that survived. The judge sentenced him to one year of prison for every dog that died and six months for the one dog that lived. He will be serving, just for the death of the dogs, 13 and a half years in prison, also five more years for the possession of methamphetamine.
I put two and two together and realized that the woman will not serve any prison time for killing her young boy, but the man will serve nearly 14 years for killing dogs. I am not an animal hater, but I believe that the woman should be punished more than the man. What happened to our justice system? They need to get their priorities straight.
