As the Emery High tennis team is fighting for second place in region play this season, the second doubles team of Courtney Sitterud and Kaitlin Potter have not lost a match this season whether in region play or not. With just a home match against region leader Juan Diego left in the season, Emery is battling North Sanpete for second.
Last week, Courtney and Kaitlin defeated Salem Hills 6-3, 6-4 on Thursday night in Salem and earlier had defeated North Sanpete 3-6, 6-0 and 6-2. According to Coach Tom Hansen, “I think maybe they were asleep at the start of the North Sanpete match, they started slowly and soon woke up and smoked them the rest of the way.”
Courtney and Kaitlin lead the region and will play Juan Diego this week at home as they look to beat that team for the second time.
Emery’s first doubles team also won both of their matches last week as the team is solidly in second place in region play. Adrienne Weihing and Melanie Frisbee defeated Salem Hills 6-2, 6-2 and North Sanpete 6-3, 6-7 and 6-2.
In singles play, first singles player Whitney Saupan has constantly improved this season. Although she lost to Salem Hills 3-6, 4-6 and to North Sanpete 6-4, 4-6 and 6-7. Again Hansen talked about one of his players, “Last week against North Sanpete, Whitney lost a three hour match. The first time she played the Hawks this season, she got crushed. She has improved a ton.”
Second singles Stevie Feuers and third singles Katie Turner lost both of their matches last week.
After playing Juan Diego at home, Emery will travel to St. George and play in the dual region tournament for matches Wednesday and Thursday. All the region 8 and region 9 players will be seeded into one tournament with the best coming out to play in the state tournament the following week.
Desert Hills and Juan Diego are probably the best two teams in the state and will play in the same dual tournament. Regions 10 and 11 will do the same up north.
