It was a cold, blustery week on the softball fields and with a loss in the Spartan’s region opener to North Sanpete, things didn’t get any better off the field. After defeating Richfield on Tuesday 11-8, Emery never could get things going on Thursday and lost to the Hawks 8-0. Emery finished off the week with another win over North Sevier on Saturday, this time by a score of 21-1.
In the loss, Emery’s usually potent bats were silent except for sophomore Makiah Sherman. Sherman had two singles in the game as she got the only two hits of the game by a Spartan. Four Emery batters walked but 14 Emery batters struck out, as Emery never really mounted much of a threat in the game. Emery did load the bases in the fourth inning on walks but a pop up ended the inning. Emery also aided the Hawk cause by committing six errors.
In the Richfield game, Emery scored seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning after having allowed five runs in the top of the inning to grab back the lead and eventually get the win.
Emery scored one run in the first inning on a double by Michelle Oliver and a triple by Gabby Guymon. Emery scored two more runs in the second inning as Sherman and Kenzie Grange hit back-to-back homeruns. Emery added one more run in the fourth inning as Sherman singled, Grange singled and Sherman scored as the Templar third baseman booted a ball hit by Adriane Weihing.
In that sixth inning, Sherman singled, Grange doubled and then after two outs Oliver singled, Guymon singled, Danavin Reed doubled, Abbie Kay singled and Markette Tanner hit a 2-2 pitch out over the left field fence for a three-run homerun. After the homer, Sherman and Grange each singled again before the third out.
Emery had 19 hits in the game with Sherman and Grange each having four of those. Emery only committed two errors in the game.
In the game at Salina, Emery scored five runs in the first inning, eight runs in the second inning, three runs in the fourth inning and five runs in the fifth inning. Emery gave up a single run in the first inning.
In the first inning Oliver doubled, Guymon singled, Tanner walked, Kay walked, Grange singled and Shelby Mason singled with the first five scoring.
In the second inning Sherman led off with a triple followed by Oliver hitting a triple. Guymon singled but was out at second base on a fielder’s choice hit by Tanner. Reed then doubled with Kay walking and both scored on a homerun by Grange. Mason then doubled and scored.
In the fourth inning, Grange doubled and after two outs, Sherman, Oliver, Guymon and Tanner all singled with the first three scoring. In the final inning, Kay singled, Mason walked, Weihing doubled, Sherman singled, Oliver singled, Guymon singled and Tanner singled as Emery ended the inning with those last five runs.
Emery now hosts Juan Diego on Tuesday and travels to Carbon on Thursday as region games continue. Game times are 3:30 p.m.
