Loving father, grandfather, and friend, died peacefully Saturday June 27, 2009 following a couraeous battle with cancer.
Terry was born in Bingham Canyon, Utah Sept. 29, 1946, the fifth child of Jessie Wilford Sandstrom and Lillis Oberg Sandstrom. Terry graduated from Bingham High School May 1964. He spent two years in the service of his country during the Vietnam War, one year of which was spent in the Panama Canal Zone.
On his return, Terry married Jeanette Withers. They began their life together in Riverton and later moved to Cleveland, where Terry built his family a home so he and Jeanette could raise four beautiful children; Brett (Cindy) Sandstrom of Lehi; Stacey (Jim) Gordon of Huntington; Travis (Christal) Sandstrom of Syracuse; and Tiffany (Chris) Anderson of New Harmony.
Terry worked as a truck driver for a short time then tried his hand at coal mining. After sustaining a back injury that left him in a great deal of pain for years to come he and Jeanette opened a small restaurant in Huntington. Terry was truly at home behind the grill and found great joy in cooking and visiting with “the Crew” at the Lunch Box.
Terry enjoyed the outdoors and could often be found wandering in search of the perfect branch or piece of wood that he could turn in to one of his masterpieces. Terry will always be remembered for his ability to, as he put it, “Find the heart of the wood.” His many walking sticks, willow chairs, and other works of art are cherished by all those whom he felt had earned them.
In later years he and Jeanette were divorced and Terry moved to Beaver Dam, Ariz. He made many friends there and was loved by all who knew him. Terry truly saw the world in ways most could not, he saw beauty where others did not. He took time to not only watch, but marvel at the sunset.
Terry is survived by his children, 17 grandchildren, brothers Ted and Sid Sandstrom, sister, Gwen Crump, and countless friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and elder brother Jack.
Graveside services will be held on July 2, 2009 at 10 a.m. at the Huntington City Cemetery under the direction of Mitchells Funeral Home.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to those who have shown acts of kindness through these difficult times, and especially to Biguns’ “Family” in Beaver Dam.
