The Huntington City Council held a public hearing at their monthly council meeting to discuss and decide the future of a new fire station in Huntington. After months of discussion and after overwhelming support of a citywide survey, the council unanimously voted to proceed with the process of building a new fire station and EMS garage.
In the public hearing, the council discussed five possible locations as the site of the new building. They discussed the pros and cons of each location before each vocally expressed their view and settled on one site. The public hearing was held as a stipulation of applying for CIB funding.
The five sites looked at were at the rodeo grounds on property currently owned by the city, property on east Center Street also currently owned by the city, property on Main Street located between 300 N. and 400 N., property located on Main Street located between 300 S. and 400 S. and property located on Canyon Road south of the ball complex.
The property located south of the ball complex was selected by the council as the preferred site. This property is 17.7 acres in size and the city has an agreement on price with the current owner as they did with all the property owners whose property was considered.
After closing the public hearing, the next item on the agenda was public comments. All in attendance at the meeting were in favor of both the site and the idea of building a new station to serve the residents of Huntington and the surrounding area.
Mayor Hilary Gordon talked about Huntington City joining with other local cities and counties in hiring a lobbyist to fight the elimination of local entities collecting sales tax from mining equipment sold in the local market at the next session of the legislature. This action by the state has cost the city more than $12,200 during the past two years. The council authorized up to $5,000 as their share of the overall cost.
Business licenses were authorized for Castle Valley Supply, Got Nails? and Subway with a new owner. The city also approved allowing Emery Animal Health to sell city dog licenses when they perform the vaccinations necessary to obtain that license. This will be done as a courtesy to their clientele.
The city will hold their annual Christmas party for the residents of the city on Dec. 3 at Huntington Elementary at 6 p.m. Dinner will be served and entertainment will follow. There is no charge and all are invited.
Finally, the Mayor reported UDOT will be doing some curb and gutter work on Main Street between 300 S. and 500 S. The amount of work will be decided by how much money is left in their budget for the current year. This will help eliminate a water problem that occurs every time it rains.
The next Huntington City Council meeting will be held Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m.
