The Green River boy’s and girls basketball teams both went to the Christmas break with wins in the first game of region 19 play. The Green River girls defeated Monument Valley 74-40 and then the Green River boys defeated Monument Valley 71-34.
The Lady Pirates are currently 8-1 for the season and are ranked number two in 1-A girls basketball by the Deseret News. Panguitch is ranked number one and Piute is ranked number three.
The Lady Pirates won each quarter in winning this region basketball game. After winning the first quarter by only a score of 19-16, the Green River team dominated the next three quarters to get the easy win. They won period two 17-5, period three 18-9 and the final period 20-10.
Megan Hatt led the way with 34 points while Jaimee Johnson scored 16 points and Michaela Hughes scored 13 points as three Pirates ended the game in double figures. Cady Mecham scored five points and Cassi Mecham, Melissa Antillon and Sarah Swalberg scored two points each.
Hatt, in addition to scoring, also pulled down six rebounds, had four assists and grabbed one steal. Swalberg led the team with 16 assists and had seven steals in the game. Antillon pulled down 11 rebounds and Cady had 10 rebounds and six steals.
The Pirate boys won just as easily. They won the first quarter 20-4 and the second quarter 19-0 as they led at the half 39-4. Monument Valley won period three 16-13 before Green River won the final period 19-14. Individual stats were not available.
