"Nick Stoddard tries for a piece of the rebound against Delta."

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports writer

The Emery High boy’s basketball team was home for two games last week and ended the week by splitting those two games. Emery defeated Manti on Friday night 55-41 after having lost to Delta on Wednesday night 73-65. Both games were games that could have gone either way but Emery was only able to snag the second game.
Against Manti, Emery only led the Templars 34-32 after three quarters and 40-36 midway through the final period before everything worked at the end. Emery scored in their final seven possessions of the game to ice the win. Five of those possessions were capped off by free throws as the Manti team fouled to try and get the ball back and Emery responded by nailing 13 of 14 free throws in the time frame. In fact the only miss came on the very last free throw with hardly any time on the clock. Ty Benson went four for four, Quinn Montgomery went two for two and Kashe Potter went seven for eight in that quarter.
Against Delta, Emery trailed 45-41 after three quarters, tied it at 47-47 with 6:11 left in the game and then lost the game as Delta hit free throw after free throw down the stretch.
Delta was able to get to the middle of the key easily it seemed throughout the game and were able to score time and again in close.
Ty Benson led the team with 20 points before he fouled out of the contest. He hit three 3-pointers and was three of five at the free throw line. Quinn Montgomery scored 10 points including a pair of 3-pointers before he also fouled out. Kashe Potter scored eight points and also fouled out of the game. Kash Jewkes continued his trend of playing well as he scored 16 points in the game. Normally Kash is a deadly free throw shooter but in this game he went four for nine. Emery, as a team, went 15 for 24 in the game for 62 percent. If they could have shot free throws Wednesday night like they did Friday night, it might have been a whole different ballgame. On Friday, Emery went 26 for 30 at the line for close to 90 percent.
Also scoring against Delta was Nick Stoddard with two points, Dallon Cologie with six points on a pair of 3-pointers, Gage Bell with two points and Chance Huntington with a single point.
Emery led Manti 10-9 after the first quarter after Emery had taken a 6-0 lead. Emery increased the lead to 28-21 at the half before Manti made it a game in the second half.
Jewkes was the leading scorer in this game with 20 points. Kash had eight field goals and went four for four at the free throw line. Jewkes also had 16 rebounds in the game along with two blocks and two assists.
Potter and Benson each scored 11 points in the game. Benson hit a 3-pointer and went eight for eight at the free throw line. Ty had four rebounds and six assists. Potter went 10 for 12 at the free throw line and had four rebounds. Also scoring for Emery was Stoddard with six points, Montgomery with four points and Bell with two points. Stoddard also had six rebounds in the game.
Coach Todd Jeffs after the Manti game to his players, “That was a great win, we needed that. We have got to cut down on our turnovers (they had 19). We are making progress.”
Emery will travel this week to Richfield on Wednesday night and then to North Sanpete on Friday night as region 12 action continues.
