PRICE-Bernice LeFlore Armstrong, age 83, passed away June 24, 2011 at Castleview Hospital in Price after an accidental fall.
She was born Sept. 27, 1927 to Houston Benjamin and Ina Georgia Overby LeFlore in Wister, Okla. where she grew up and attended school.
After graduating from high school she married John Armstrong on Feb. 11, 1946 in Fort Smith, Ark. In 1947 the family moved to Hiawatha so the men could work in the coal mines.
Bernice was an unwavering Christian woman with strong faith and beliefs that helped her through many trying and difficult times. She was baptized and became a member of the First Baptist Church of Price on May 10, 1953 where she was an active and lifelong member of the church. She taught Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, was a member of the kitchen committee, served as church custodian, and attended Bible Study each week.
Bernice loved children and was like a second mother to many of the children in the community. For years she provided day care for many children in her home. She liked to do embroidery work and enjoyed making beautiful quilts and hand quilting them with her mother and Ona Barnett. She was a wonderful cook and spent many hours cooking, baking, canning and making jam, especially apricot-pineapple. She made delicious cobblers, pies and the best dinner rolls. There was always something good to eat at her house. She loved spending time with her family and enjoyed getting out with them for a short trip to the “cedars” for a walk or a camping trip to the desert or Huntington Canyon. Recently her favorite time was spent reminiscing about the good old days in Hiawatha.
She is survived by her loving husband, John Armstrong of Price; children, Edward Allen (Debbie) Armstrong, LeFlore, Okla., John Arlen (Janet) Armstrong, Price, Kathy Vance (Ray Hill), Price, Richard Armstrong (Lisa Regis), Price; brother, Joe (Jewel) LeFlore, LeFlore, Okla.; sister, Betty (Clyde) Reaveley, Layton, Utah; grandchildren, Ann (Dennis) Milano, Helper, Chris (Brandie) Armstrong, Wellington, Michelle (Adam) Pilling, Price, Matthew (Haley) Vance, Spring Glen, Cathrine Zarkowski, Wisconsin; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Doris LeFlore and Margaret Sullivan.
Funeral service, Thursday, June 30, 2011, 10 a.m., Price First Baptist Church (200 North 300 East). Family will receive friends at Mitchell Funeral Home Wednesday evening from 7-8 p.m. and at the church Thursday one hour prior to service. Interment, Price City Cemetery.
