Reports of an earthquake came to Emery County Sheriff’s Office (ECSO) Dispatch from residents in Huntington, Castle Dale, Orangeville and Ferron. According to the University of Utah Seismograph Station, the earthquake occurred at 9:27 p.m. on Nov. 9.
The epicenter of the shock was in the Wasatch Plateau in central Utah, seven miles northwest of Orangeville, and 10 miles west-southwest of Huntington, in Emery County.
ECSO Emergency Management responded by coordinating efforts to assess the impact of the earthquake on residents and critical facilities. Personnel from ECSO and Emery Water Conservancy District responded to Joe’s Valley to check on residents there as well as the Joe’s Valley Dam. No injuries or damage were found.
ECSO Dispatch made contact with Deer Creek Coal Mine and was advised by personnel at the mine that there were no injuries and that no damage had been found.
ECSO personnel contacted the Hunter Power Plant south of Castle Dale and the Huntington Power Plant and were advised that there were no injuries or damage at either facility. The Electric Lake dam in Huntington Canyon and Millsite Dam above Ferron were also checked and no damage was found. The American Red Cross contacted ECSO Emergency Management and offered assistance if needed. There have been no reports of injuries or damage.
The magnitude of the earthquake was 3.9. The depth of the earthquake was 3.7 miles. On Friday another earthquake was felt, this one was 3.3 in magnitude. The epicenter was 21 miles ESE of Cleveland and 21 miles ESE of Elmo. The time was 10:15 p.m. No damage was reported.
