At the November 2011 Huntington City Council meeting, the upcoming holidays were on the minds of the city with two events that will help celebrate them.
Councilman Jeff Cowley mentioned the annual Thanksgiving morning turkey trot. This is a 5k race down Center Street towards the desert and back and will start at 9 a.m. For the little children, there is a trot around the block. There is a $1 charge per person and each participant is given a t-shirt and is eligible to participate in the drawings that will follow.
Councilman Mark Justice announced the annual Huntington City Christmas party. Everyone is invited to come and eat and enjoy the festivities. The menu will include chili, chicken noodle soup, a potato bar with all the trimmings and various desserts. This will be held at Huntington Elementary School in the cafeteria and the gym on Dec. 2 at 6 p.m. There is no cost on this.
In other business, Councilman Travis Larsen gave an update on the new fire station and also an update on the water supply. The Huntington Canyon reservoirs are all at least 75 percent full already and the snow has started to fall and accumulate for next season. It is anticipated that the city will be in good shape next season.
Councilman Jerry Livingston thanked the people of Huntington that use the dumpster site for being conscientious with their dumping of trash, debris and branches. Livingston also reminded the residents that the city streets need to have all RVs, boats or trailers removed from the streets so that city crews can plow the snow easily and efficiently. The city ordinances allow for up to 72 hour parking.
Although it was a close election, current city councilmen Travis Larsen, Julie Jones and Jerry Livingston all retained their seats in the just past general election. Mayor Hilary Gordon congratulated them on their election.
Councilperson Julie Jones announced the beginning of a new program at the cemetery. People will be able to buy a park bench that city employees will place around the cemetery so that people may rest during their visits. Memorial plaques may be placed on these benches. Contact the city if you have a desire to participate.Residents who mutilate, lose or otherwise have to replace a garbage can will now be charged a fee for this replacement. If it is normal wear and tear, the resident will not be charged.
