San Rafael Junior High honors Veterans each year on Veteran’s Day. This year all of the Veterans were invited to lunch at the school before the annual program. The program began with a presentation of the American flag by the local Veterans. Tyson Roper led the group in the Pledge of Allegiance. The seventh grade choir sang the Star Spangled Banner. Madelyn Carter student body vice-president welcomed everyone. Ky Horrocks read the presidential proclamation honoring our Veterans.
Some of the students were selected to read their favorite quotes regarding freedom. These readers included: Shelby Allen, Jadceia Allred, Chrishie Burgess, Kayden Davis, Alyssa Garrett, Kaitlyn Gilson, Afton Grindley, Jake Jensen, Levi Jensen, Cheyenne Manzanares, Taijah Price, Thomas Sawyer, Sydney Timothy, Charlie Turner and Shelby Williams.
Madelyn Carter is a member of the Junior American Legion Auxiliary. She spoke to the audience about Veterans. She said the Veterans have given us our greatest gifts. The gift of freedom. They have risked their lives for us and we should thank them.
She said her family had the opportunity to visit the World War II memorial and while there an old man and his wife were there visiting too and Madelyn’s mother went up to this man and told him thanks for his service to our country. She talked to the man for awhile. There are 23 million Veterans in our country.
Carter said when she sees the American flag she thinks of the stars on the flag as Veterans. “We are the greatest nation on the earth,” said Carter.
The eighth and ninth grade choir sang “To Those Who Serve.”
The ceremony ended with the playing of TAPS by Melissa Arrien, Reece Behling, Ashton Palacios and Jaden Sitterud. The colors were retired by the American Legion.
The students interacted with the Veterans after the program and shook their hands, thanking them for their service to our country.
