"Jeridi Price pitches for Emery in the game against Grand."

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Writer

The Emery High Lady Spartans played just one game last week but they made the most of that game as they traveled to Moab and defeated Grand 11-8 in a region 15 contest. The game took a while as the two teams combined for those 19 runs but they also combined to have 33 base hits in the game. The two teams sent 88 batters to the plate and 46 of those batters got on base.
The strangest call of the game came in the fifth inning. Emery’s Shandee Jewkes, the second batter up in the inning, hit a fair ball over the fence for an apparent homerun. Unfortunately, the home plate umpire ruled it only a triple because the umpire said that Jewkes missed touching home plate and so she was out when she went in the dugout. Although she jumped up and down on the plate somehow the umpire failed to see that even though there were no other footprints anywhere close.
Six Spartans had extra base hits in the game. Besides Jewkes’ homerun-triple, Auminee Bennett and Whitney Roper hit home runs and Jeridi Price, Jaiden Huntington and Hailey Beckstead hit doubles.
Jeridi Price started the game on the mound for Emery and Whitney Roper came in to pitch in the fifth inning.
Emery scored two runs in the second inning, three runs in the fourth inning, four runs in the sixth inning and two runs in the seventh inning. Grand scored four runs in the fourth inning to trail 5-4, one run in the sixth inning to trail 9-5 and three runs in the final inning.Emery had four base hits in the second inning. Singles by Bennett, Kaitlyn Thomson and Jewkes and Price’s double accounted for those hits. Emery had four base hits in the fourth inning also. Jewkes singled, Bennett singled, Roper singled and Beckstead doubled.
In the sixth inning, Emery had seven base hits to score those four runs. Jo Jennings, Bryton Hess, Huntington, Price, Thomson, Jewkes and Beckstead hit singles. Bennett and Roper hit solo homers in the final inning.
Emery has two home games this week. On Tuesday, Emery will host South Sevier in a region 15 match and on Wednesday, North Sevier will come to town to play a non-region contest.
