Kim Edgehouse: Still snipping away after 30 years

Kim Edgehouse has lived in Castle Dale her entire life except for the time she spent in Provo at beauty school. Taking care of hair, styling, perming and cutting has been a passion for Edgehouse since she was a child.
She is the daughter of Kimball and Ann Larsen of Castle Dale. As a child she would tell the neighbor children that their mothers said she was supposed to cut their hair and she would proceed to trim their hair.
Things really became serious in high school and the summer before her senior year she started commuting to Price each day to spend a half day at college. Friends her age that accompanied her to beauty school included, Jarilyn Magnuson, Tory Ward, Sherrie Snow, Trina Cox and Janet Jensen. Edgehouse said of those ladies the only one that cuts hair besides her is Tory Ward Killian part-time in Huntington.
“I attended Mary’s College of Beauty in Provo. After I finished I started working for Maude Killpack in Ferron. She really taught me a lot. This job is what I always wanted to do and I have never tired of it. I have been here in my shop in my home for 30 years now. This is my 30th anniversary. I have been doing hair for 34 years. I have never had to advertise my business which is named, Cutting Edge-house and the house is a picture of a house.
“I have kept busy just by word of mouth and referrals. My clientele ranges from young to old, but most of the people, I have been cutting their hair for a long time. I do get new clientele, too.
“I really love my ladies. I have compassion and integrity, but I don’t gossip or repeat what my customers might tell me and that’s important to me. I try to be a good listener.
“I love doing perms and colors. I do cuts and styles. I really love perms. I won an award once for giving the best perm. I go to trade shows and keep up with all the latest style magazines. I try to take care of my customers hair. Some hair dressers will bleach hair until it’s damaged, but I don’t do that. I have customers that come from all over. Some from Ferron, Price, St. George and Salt Lake.
“This really is the perfect job. My ladies have always been good to work around my schedule and I’m good to work around theirs. I have been able to stay home with my kids and be there with them,” said Edgehouse.
One of her customers, Phyllis Johnson said, “Everyone always asks, ‘who does your hair,’ and I tell them Kim. She’s been doing my hair for three years now and Kim was recommended to me by my Avon lady.”
Edgehouse said, “My husband Joe is from Ohio. He came out here to work in the coal mines. I met him not long after he came here and we recently celebrated our 30th anniversary. We have three children, Kasey, Kaylee and Kyler. Joe really likes it out here. He came right out of high school. We went back to visit in Ohio and his parents used to come out here. But, this is home now to Joe. He loves to fish and golf.
“I like to relax. I worked at Magnuson Lumber for awhile, too. I like to camp and be where my family is. I am glad everyone lives close so we can get together. I love being a grandma and we have Cage who is 7 and Oakley is 8 months.
“Working from home is great. In between appointments, I hurry and do something around the house or throw in a load of laundry. Having a home business really helps me keep the house clean.
“I love being at home. I’m really a home body so this job is ideal for me. I enjoy the special friendships I have made over the years. I like to help people feel good about themselves and having their hair done, makes them feel good. I make home visits to a few shut-ins and to some people in the nursing home. You really grow close to your people over the years. I don’t plan on retiring any time soon. I can schedule my appointments so I can take a break if I need to.
“My clients were very understanding when my daughter Kaylee became sick. They had to go somewhere else for awhile. But, they all came back. I like being my own boss, I can take time off and not get fired. I had to take a leave of absence when Kaylee was sick. We were always taking her to the doctor and I was helping to take care of my grandson. This job has given me the freedom to do that,” said Edgehouse.
