"Jeridi Price puts the ball up for Emery."

By GARY ARRINGTON Sports Writer

The Emery High Lady Spartans ran their basketball season record to 3-0 with two more blowout non-region victories last week. Emery hosted the Carbon High Lady Dinos on Tuesday night and the Union High Lady Cougars on Thursday night. The Carbon score was 40-24 and the Union score was 58-36.
Against Carbon, the two teams started off exactly opposite of what the final score would indicate what had occurred. Carbon scored the first nine points of the game, as they were the dominant team at the onset. Emery made a run at the end of the period to cut the deficit to 2 points as they trailed 9-7 after the first quarter.
As it turned out, that was really Carbon’s only bright spot of the game as the Spartans steadily pulled away. Emery won the second quarter 9-6 and led at the half 16-15. At this point, the game was still competitive even though the Spartans had been on a 16-6 run to close the half.
Carbon never really got started in the second half, which was really kind of strange for them because they are a decent team and a team that is expected to have a good season. Emery outscored the Dinos 14-3 in the third quarter and 10-6 in the fourth quarter to win the game going away.
The Spartans defeated Union by being really good in the odd quarters of the game. Emery won the first quarter 22-15 and the third quarter 28-10 in grabbing the win. The Spartans were outscored in the other two periods 11-8.
Emery has got off to a good start this season for several reasons. While the offense is still a work in progress, as it has constantly gotten better through the first three games, the defense has been outstanding, as the Spartans have kept their opponents off their offensive game. Emery has out-rebounded their opponents in each of the games this season.
Emery is also shooting the ball much better this season. Against Carbon, Emery shot 39 percent from the field and 83 percent from the line. Against Union, Emery was 54 percent from the field and 85 percent from the line.
The two seniors on the team led the way against the Dinos. Jeridi Price and Shelby Allred each scored 13 points in the game. Ashlynn Allred scored 6 points and Kelcie Cox, Bailey Rasmussen, Lexie Huntington and Ashton Bell each scored 2 points.
Jeridi also led the team with 8 rebounds while Bailey pulled down 7 rebounds. Shelby had three. Jeridi led the team with 2 steals.
Against Union, Kelcie Cox and Bailey Rasmussen stepped up and each of these Spartan players scored 13 points each in this game to lead the team. Ashlynn Allred scored 10 points and Jeridi had 9. Other scorers were Lexie Huntington with 5 points and Shelby and Ashton with 4 points each.
Bailey had 5 rebounds and Jeridi 4 rebounds to lead the team in this department while Kelcie had 4 steals to lead the team here. After having only 5 assists against Carbon, Emery had 15 assists against Union as the team is progressing in the team aspect of the game.
Emery is at home this Tuesday night against Uintah and then will be at home again on Thursday night against North Sevier. The Spartans will be looking to improve their record to 5-0 for the season.
