On Dec. 26 the Emery County Sheriff’s Office received a call from Ross Miller of Missoula, Mont. Miller said that his son Blake Miller was rafting down the Green River, and he was tracking him with a DeLorme inReach GPS Tracker. Miller said that Blake had launched his raft on Dec. 16, 2012 at the Green River State Park and was planning to float to Hite Marina at Lake Powell.
Miller said that he had told Blake to check in with his inReach every morning and night so he could make sure that he was OK. Miller called the Emery County Sheriff’s Office on Dec. 26, 2012 at approximately 3:19 p.m. and reported that Blake had been checking in at the same location on the Green River since Dec. 19, 2012.
Miller stated that Blake had still been checking in every morning and night but, he would like us to check his condition and possibly get him off the river. On Dec. 27, 2012 Sgt. Mitch Vetere responded to the Three Canyons area and was able to make contact with Blake. Blake advised him that he was OK but, was in an area that he was unable to hike out of. Sgt. Vetere then told Blake that a helicopter was coming to get him. Capt. Luke Bowman and Trooper Matt Urban were called to assist with the UHP helicopter and they arrived at 3:35 p.m. Capt. Bowman and Trooper Urban were able to rescue Blake and fly him back to the Green River airport where he was picked up and given a ride back to his truck that was located at the Green River State Park. Blake said that he had plenty of food and adequate clothing and supplies to stay on the river until Jan. 10 but, the river froze over and he became stranded there. The Emery County Sheriff’s Office reported Blake Miller was in good condition. He is 32 years old.
