Lady Spartan swim team no. 1 in region

Led by seniors Jessica Guymon and Hailee Rogers, the Emery High women’s swim team won the region 12 championship in a meet hosted by Carbon High. Jessica and Hailee, joined by Jessica’s sister Laryssa, each won two region championships and the three also swam on a pair of relay teams that were victorious. Emery brought home the trophy by winning eight of 11 events and then scoring just enough points throughout the meet to grab the win.
Going into the final event of the day, Emery led Richfield by 14 points and needed enough points from their 400-yard free relay team to seal the deal. The team of Tanner Petersen, Krista Wright, Melece Pulli and Madi Allinson did just that as they finished third behind Richfield’s second and Emery maintained their lead and won the meet 271-257.
Carbon High was third with 252 points followed by Spanish Fork with 224, Payson with 29, Grand with 28 and Delta with 12. In the region meet, each participant can swim in two individual events and two relays. The Emery High coaches spread their talent around enough to maximize their return and the entire women’s team did a good job throughout the meet reaching their potential.
The first event of the meet was the girl’s 200-yard medley relay. Hailee, Jessica, Laryssa and Chyanne Carter exceeded their best time of the season by nearly four seconds in beating Spanish Fork by almost eight seconds.
In event 15, the girl’s 200-yard free relay, the same four girls took a second off their best time of the year in defeating a Carbon team by more than three seconds.
Laryssa won the first individual event for Emery by winning the 200-yard IM. Guymon swam the event in 2:28.6, nearly four seconds better than her seeded time and nearly 12 seconds better than the second place finisher. Laryssa later won 100-yard fly by bettering her time by nearly two seconds.
Jessica won the 50-yard free with a time of 26.97 beating Paula Gilson of Carbon who had a time of 27.79. Jessica’s best time coming into the meet was 27.48. Jessica then won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:14.63 nearly four seconds faster than the second place Richfield swimmer.
Hailee won the 100-yard free with a time of 59.77 over Gilson of Carbon who swam a 1:03.28. Rogers’s best time coming in was at 1:02.04. Hailee then won the 100-yard backstroke in 1:08.63.
Other top 10 finishes include Chyanne Carter sixth and Krista Wright 10th in the 200-yard free. Madi Allinson fourth, Tanner Petersen sixth and Melece Pulli seventh in the 200-yard IM. Pulli finished ninth in the 100-yard fly. Savanna Hall was eighth in the 100-yard breast. Allinson was third and Petersen was fifth in the 100-yard back.
The Emery men’s team finished fourth with 211.5 points behind Spanish Fork with 322, Carbon with 223.5 and Richfield with 212. The two Emery teams combined to finish second in the combined team scores with 482.5 behind Spanish Fork with 546 and ahead of Carbon with 475.5
Senior Tyler Pulli won the only event of the day for the boys by winning the 200-yard free with a time of 2:07.44 barely edging out a Richfield swimmer by 9 hundreds of a second. Pulli finished third in the 100-yard breast.
Senior Colton Clement finished second in the 200-yard IM and third in the 100-yard back. Spencer Fauver finished second in the 50-yard free and tied for second in the 100-yard free.
Other top 10 finishes included Tex Stowe seventh in the 200-yard free, Levi Jensen eighth in the 200-yard IM, Justan Potter sixth in the 50-yard free and ninth in the 100-yard free, McKade Hansen eighth in the 50-yard free and eighth in the 100-yard fly, Kelvin Childs sixth in the 100-yard breast and Devin Wilson ninth in the 100-yard back.
The 200-yard medley relay team of Fauver, Pulli, Clement and Conor MacDonald finished fourth, the 200-yard free relay team of Pulli, MacDonald, Potter and Fauver finished third and the 400-yard free relay team of Clement, Jensen, Kayden Parkins and Potter finished third.
The Utah State swim meet will be held at BYU on February 9. The top two in each individual event plus the top relay team are automatically entered. After that, the top 24 times of the year are also entered. Jessica Guymon, Hailee Rogers, Colton Clement and Tyler Pulli were all named to the All Region 12 Academic team for the year.
