It’s been around a few years since 1974 and many hundreds of games have been played at the Huntington softball complex. It’s now time to put some money into the complex and make some renovations which will keep Emery County ball players happy well into the future.
A grant from the Community Impact Board for $400,000 and project money from the Local Building Authority of Emery County in the amount of $500,000 will fund the project.
Jake Atwood, the Emery County Recreation Director will oversee the project as well as the recreation board and the LBA.
County Attorney David Blackwell will draft an agreement which outlines both parties role in the project. The money will be placed in an escrow account. As work is completed, the money will be reimbursed to the entities involved from this account.
Atwood said he would also like to find sponsors for the project so they can make the project money go further.
“We hope to make it a multi-use complex. We have formed a committee with members from girls softball, baseball, soccer and flag football and other users of the complex. We are working with Johansen and Tuttle as the engineers for the project and they are ready to move forward with preliminary drafts and design. We hope to start in October,” said Atwood.
The recommendations of the committee will go to the recreation board for review.
The fields will be redone completely with leveling, new dirt in the infields, sprinklers and new top soil and grass in the outfields.
The restrooms and concession stand will be remodeled and enlarged.
There will be no use of the fields during the 2014 season while the work takes place.
New irrigation will be installed and electronic scoreboards.
Atwood said the improvements are a long time coming but it will be worth the wait as the facility becomes more multi-use friendly for all the different kinds of sports the recreation district has to offer.
